Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The most regularly used facilities on campus are extremely new. Only the fine arts schools and the administration buildings are yet to be renovated. The administration building is poised to be demolished in order to make room for a new building, and the fine arts buildings are in good condition and have endearing structural attributes that can’t be replicated. There is not a building on campus that is in bad condition, with the sole exception being Kemp Hall. A few of the other small halls that are converted from old manors suffer the same problems, but not to the extent that Kemp does. Every spring, roaches seem to manifest themselves in the walls and make their rounds until someone calls the exterminator. The extermination of the roaches has become an annual event, like a cleansing rite.

Most of campus was built within the last 15 years. Buildings turn the lights on for you when you approach classrooms, they flush the toilet and run water without the touch of a button, and they regulate energy expenditures in order to be environmentally friendly. Most of the buildings have wireless Internet access, and every building has a lounge area incorporated in one form or another for studying. The facilities at IWU are equal parts luxurious and functional, without being overly elaborate. The construction is scheduled to continue, so within a few years, the campus may have entirely newly built facilities.

Small Weight Room/Poor Cafeteria Food

I would like to see an expansion on the athletic center. The field house is big and there is plenty of room in the open area to play baseball and run on the track. But when it comes to the weight room, it is quite small. If one team in particular is in there lifting, it is almost impossible for anyone else to get in there and get a workout in. The weight room definitely needs to be expanded so it can accommodate for more people. As for the common dining area, the food is bland. There is always a sandwich bar, salad bar and pizza bar available and then there are 2 main meals that change every day. Once in a while there is a really good meal but most of the time the meals could be much better. Especially when students are paying almost $50,000 a year to attend this university.

Great Library

Aside from not enough computers, the Ames Library is great; it's a great place to get work done without that daunting "library" feel.

Athletic Center

Built by a man who wanted to see IWU give back to the community for once, the Shirk Center is the athletic center on campus open to the public. Has a lot of greak work out machines, free weights, raquetball courts, and a few large basketball courts and tracks.

Favorite Things To Do

All major theater productions put on by the theater department are presented in the McPherson Theater. Student readings and independent productions take place in the Underground, which is down the stairs from Starbucks. Much smaller, low-key presentations and installations are staged in the Phoenix Theater, a much smaller gallery behind the Underground.

Catch the weekly movie at Hansen Center; football and basketball games are always a big draw; lots of events happen on the quad; chase the campus squirrels.

There’s usually a movie or two showing around campus, a popular option everywhere, but that’s just the beginning. Free concerts at the Musical Arts Center are appealing, as are the operas and ballets performed there. The IU Auditorium consistently brings in big-name individual acts like Bill Cosby, Ani DiFranco, and George Carlin, along with shows such as Stomp, Rent, and Miss Saigon. The most popular place on campus for at least a few months out of the year is undeniably the Assembly Hall, where the men’s basketball team takes on its opponents.
