Parking Permits
Simply register your vehicle with Security in order to obtain a parking permit. The sticker allows parking in any lot on campus within posted hours. All students are permitted to have a car on campus, and many do. Campus is small enough that you can get by without one, but it makes it difficult to visit a lot of the town.
College Prowler Take
Since all students are allowed to bring cars to campus, parking can sometimes be tight. The nearest parking lot to the quad is also the farthest from any of the dorms, so your choice of parking space is a give-and-take situation. Thankfully, anywhere you need to get to from any parking lot is within a five-minute walk. The absolute best parking spaces are in faculty lots, but student parking is only available there after 5 p.m. Just make sure you can wake up early enough to beat the tow truck destined for your car in the morning. Otherwise, the parking lot adjacent to the Shirk Center is always open and is next to a fairly busy street, so your belongings are safe.
Considering the number of students on campus and the relative proximity of campus buildings, there is a perfect amount of parking spaces available to students. The biggest parking traps are the neighborhood streets because most are no-parking zones. If you managed to park somewhere on the street that seems too good to be true, it probably is. Bloomington police will slap a bright orange sticker on your car window, and the next day your car will become the property of Brown’s Towing. Brown’s is a considerable distance from campus and can be difficult to locate for out-of-town students. To prevent this from happening, students should only park in University-designated lots.

Parking here is wonderful. When I visit other campuses, I get frustrated because I'm so used to having free student parking and big, open lots.

Parking is convenient. There’s no driving required as far as classrooms, so you really only use your car if you’re going away from campus. |

Parking is amazingly easy. There are student-friendly lots by the freshman dorms, the library, and the northwest side of campus, plus all the frats and sororities take care of their parking, for the most part. You need to register your vehicle with security, and there is no fee. If you don’t mind parallel parking, there is also a ton of that. |

There’s enough parking around. People do get towed on a regular basis, so you have to be careful. |
Did You Know?
Best Places to Find a Parking Spot:
The faculty lots are fair game after 5 p.m. They are closer to dorms and academic buildings, but fill up fast. A little-known parking secret exists in one of the faculty lots. There are about five parking spaces designated for visitors. Forego the parking permit, and park in these spaces indefinitely! They are as close as you can get, within reason.
Good Luck Getting a Parking Spot Here:
Anywhere on the street. Once cars are parallel parked on the street, they are practically immobilized.
