Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

As most students realize by their second or third year at Illinois Wesleyan, this school is exactly what it claims to be: a small, liberal arts school. This small student body facilitates intimate peer relationships but prevents social interaction on a large scale. The liberal arts approach to education is meant to introduce new ways for students to approach problems, as well as expose students to fields of study they may not otherwise experience. These gen ed requirements can be burdensome for music majors, theater majors, or students with a double major, who already need to overload on classes.

For many students, IWU could be substituted with a more affordable institution. For business majors, there are more sensible options. The business and economics school at IWU is respectable, but not worth the amount of tuition as compared to state schools. The atmosphere at IWU benefits from a mix of academia, down-to-earth students, and intelligent students with strong opinions. Conversations and colloquiums on campus are informed and debated, but pretension is popular. IWU is a respectable school on par with other small schools in Illinois, but is not as academically intense as the University of Chicago or Washington University. Students who go to Illinois Wesleyan would like the powerhouse academics of U of Chicago or Wash U, but appreciate a smaller community and more relaxed approach.

Love This School!

As a freshman I was nervous to come to college, but I love it here at IWU! The students are all so friendly and there is always something to do at night, whether you want to stay in or go out. While the courses can be challenging, the college does have a great reputation. The food and housing is good and the free parking is a perk. This campus also has a great greek life. I am so happy I chose this school over others like ISU and U of I.

I Love It

Despite any flaws that you come by at Illinois Wesleyan University, I feel the atmosphere and education here is perfect. There is an adequate social scene, but it in no way infringes upon the education of its students. Faculty is more than accommodating when it comes to office hours and personal help. However, the school lacks diversity (ethnically, economically, etc.).

Overall Experience

Overall...the education you hear about is overrated, the food sucks, parking can be a nightmare, and facilities are average, however, greek life and partying can be good.
