Central Illinois weather is absolutely ridiculous. You might think you’ve got all your bases covered, shorts and polos for the first few weeks, then jeans and sweaters for fall, but you’d be amazed at what Mother Nature thinks is funny around here. September and October are different each year. Within a week, it can fluctuate from 80-degree, sunny days to near-freezing nights to tornado warnings. Winter is always cold, but snowfall varies. The University employs people to clear all the sidewalks and drives on mornings of snowfall, and they do a great job. You sometimes wonder how it managed to snow everywhere but the walkways. Spring comes early in March and quickly transforms into summer by May. Classes usually let out just as the weather is heating up, but thankfully, most classrooms and dorms are air-conditioned. The unpredictable weather can be frustrating, but it can also be rewarding. Snowfall in October makes for great drunken sledding, but green Christmases are equally as common. The worst part about winter is that it seems to be dark all day long. Even if it isn’t raining or snowing, clouds cover the sky most of the season. This can be a drag, but a cup of hot chocolate and a warm fireplace make good study buddies. Springtime rejuvenates the trees as well as the students. By April, everyone is in good spirits and ready to finish the school year. So, though we’re sometimes thrown a curveball when planning for appropriate dress, the weather doesn’t prevent enjoyment of the year’s activities.

Nothing Like Illinois Weather

There is nothing like Illinois weather. I've lived in Illinois my whole life so I am use to the unexpected snow in March or the blazing hot day in October.

Weather

It is classic Illinois weather. The summers are hot, the fall is cool and the winter is cold. The leaves do a lot to the campus beauty however.

Cold and Bitter

Being only about 2 hours from the lake we get very chilly and bitter drafts here during the winter. The humidity is bearable and even the springs are rather cool for the time.
