College Prowler Take

The IUPUI campus is exceptionally safe, considering its urban location. There is a great number of campus police that remains very present during the day and night. Although there have been instances of students’ cars being broken into or muggings, action is taken immediately by campus police. There is going to be crime no matter where you go, but knowing that criminal activity is being closely monitored and taken very seriously is comforting. In the instances when there have been muggings and theft, there are usually signs and sketches of suspects posted right away. The police are very alert, and they help make the students feel safe and protected. Also, the IUPUI Police Web site (www.police.iupui.edu) is a great place to learn more about police services such as the 24-hour escorts and rape-defense classes.

The relatively low number of residential living units also contributes to the safety and security of the campus. While there are, of course, drinking- and drug-related crimes reported in residential areas, they are few and far between compared to most traditional campuses that have consistent recurring problems with house parties and underage drinking. This probably helps the campus police focus on more serious crime instead of typical concerns of campus police (drinking, drugs, and hazing). In general, there have been very few major safety concerns at IUPUI—and when there are concerns, action is taken immediately.

I see the campus police often on their bicycles and in patrol cars. They are usually very friendly. There are also emergency phones around the campus and in parking garages to connect to the police if there is a problem.

Security is pretty average. Just like everywhere else you go, you should use caution. If you’re walking on campus at night, campus police offers a driving service. You can call them up from any campus phone, and they will take you where you need to go on campus.

IUPUI has its own police force, the IUPUI Police, which provides security and safety on campus. In addition, the campus has its own fire department (Fire Protective Services) and an ambulance. There are a lot of emergency boxes distributed throughout the campus to activate any of these services. Most of these emergency boxes are in or around parking garages and parking lots.

I think they have it pretty much organized. Campus police are all over the place, and if there is ever a fight or anything, they always get it taken care of.

IUPUI is a pretty safe campus, and I would say that students can feel pretty safe when walking around the campus. I have never felt threatened by another student or any member of the public that wanders on campus.
