Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

IU is widely recognized as an institution that can turn floundering freshmen into impressive, work-ready professionals in four short years. A diverse selection of classes from which to choose, qualified and specialized teachers, and a myriad of extracurricular academic options available help to sustain that reputation. Regular access to professors outside of class can make or break some classes, and a student might have to go out of his or her way to dodge the anonymity that can accompany a huge student body. However, there are options that can bring a much sought-after small-school experience to a big-school environment.

Because of large class sizes (particularly the general education courses), a lot of responsibility falls squarely on the student’s shoulders. This isn’t like high school. No one will notice if you don’t attend a lecture class of 200 or sleep through a midterm, and it’s quite easy to get lost in the shuffle. Professors’ office hours, mandatory small discussion sessions, and a network of undergraduates all in the same boat help combat the obscurity of being an IU student. Recent provisions for freshmen by the administration have been widely acknowledged and appreciated by the student body, and if you have enough drive, IU’s academics can take you as far as you care to go.

The IMU

Students are always spread out on the couches and arm chairs between classes. You dont have to do work, a lot of people are taking naps. It can be hard to find a seat though.

Opportunities to Expand Knowledge and Majors

I began college as a direct admit into the Anthropology program in the College of Arts and Sciences. As a 'newbie' to the major my advisor carefully explained the various intro classes I would be taking in each of the four subfields (linguistic, archaeology, socio-cultural, and biological). She also briefly went over some other classes which could pique my interest within one or more of those fields. I soon discovered another major which seemed to suit me however, International Studies. A few simple emails later I was meeting with an International Studies advisor to begin a double major. She was extremely helpful in both describing the ins and outs of the program--quite complex-- and understanding the workload which would be necessary for the double major. International Studies at IU consists of choosing a thematic concentration (International Communications, Nations States and Boundaries, Global Integration and Development, or Arts and Culture). Then you choose a regional concentration and pair that with a language concentration. Abroad study is also required, and lots of help is available when pursuing that. With a wide range of majors to choose from--many of which work very well together--and numerous outside lectures and events to participate in to further knowledge, Anthropology and International studies is a wealth of opportunity.

IU Review

I came to Indiana University on a whim, this college was actually my second choice. However, once I attended the Institue I was very impressed. The proffesors are very caring and helpful, the students are mature, and the overall atmosphere of the campus is relaxed. Indiana University is defintely the school for me.

Did You Know?

IU’s Student Union is the largest in the world. With restaurants, a bowling alley, a pool hall, plenty of study space, and a luxury hotel, the Indiana Memorial Union is a gathering place for students working as much as students playing.

The Lilly Library has one of the premiere collections of rare books in the world. Among the gems is George Washington’s letter accepting the presidency of the United States, the New Testament of the Gutenberg Bible, the first printing of the Declaration of Independence, and four Shakespeare folios.

IU’s Art Museum was designed by I.M. Pei and Associates— the same firm that designed the entrance to the Louvre in Paris and the National Gallery in Washington, DC.

James Watson, one of two biologists credited with the discovery of DNA as we know it today, received his doctorate in zoology from IU in 1950.

Other famous IU grads include actor Kevin Kline, television newsperson Jane Pauley, and basketball star Isiah Thomas.

Can’t find a major out of the 133 offered? Try the Individualized Major Program, which allows students to create their own majors. By basing this unique method of study on your particular goals and interests, you’ll graduate with everything you need to know to get where you want to go. Past graduates have found a way to study everything from Japanese animation to fashion photography to ecohumanism via the IMP.
