Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While men’s basketball is the obvious draw, other varsity sports are not overlooked. The stands are usually filled when the men’s soccer team plays. Women’s basketball coach Kathi Bennett led the Lady Hoosiers to their first-ever Big Ten Tournament win in 2002, and that program continues to improve steadily. Also to be considered are the Hoosiers’ record-shattering six consecutive NCAA swimming titles, the valiant annual efforts of the football team (students still need an excuse to tailgate in the fall, regardless of the team’s dismal record) and an endless succession of winning seasons for the baseball team. It would be a serious faux pas to leave out one of IU’s most popular traditions, the Little 500 bicycle race in the spring.

If sitting on the sidelines isn’t enough, athletically-inclined students are very much encouraged to participate in intramurals. Every type of competition from volleyball to indoor soccer is offered, including non-physical tournaments like Euchre and sports trivia. The divisions have something for every skill level and are advertised all over campus, including in the dorms. In fact, RAs will often organize an IM sports team as a floor activity. Sports can be a big part of the IU experience, if you want them to be. Just peek your head out of your dorm room and you’ll feel the thrill that is IU athletics!

IUBB!

You'll not find a school with more pride than the Indiana Hoosiers. While our football team continues to be an embarrassment IU Basketball is back in full force. Students, alumni and residents of Bloomington are behind the team in full force and the spirit on campus right now is just amazing. We're all buzzing to finally be returning to our glory.

Needs Help

Stick to the not as popular sports. The big name sports, football and basketball, have incredibly poor record.

School Spirit

Whenever it's game day, you can always tell at IU. The majority of students proudly wear the school colors around throughout the day, whether they plan to attend the game or not. There's always plenty of support for our teams here.

Most Popular Sports

Whisper the words “Bobby Knight” within a hundred miles of Bloomington, and you’ll get a reaction. Whether that reaction is praise of the former IU basketball coach or a chair flung angrily across the room at the mere mention of the name, the passion that encompasses IU students (and the state of Indiana at large) is grand. The team has in recent years maintained its legendary status; the players are celebrities, and students have clamored for season tickets to see the games. There has been such a rush for tickets that the administration had to cut down the number of passes allotted to each order in an effort to let students cheer on their team. For many people, IU equals basketball.

Most Overlooked Teams

Women’s basketball is often overshadowed by the men’s team, but they put on an impressive show as well. The men’s soccer team is talented and popular, but a lot of students miss the game season.

School Spirit

School spirit is one of the things IU thrives on. Particularly strong when basketball season rolls around, students are proud to be Hoosiers and wear the Cream and Crimson like a badge. Every time we’re recognized as a top party school, spirit soars as we pat each other on the back and raise our glasses, but the atmosphere is just as charged whether we’re cheering the football team on to another defeat or protesting the departure of an Indiana legend. A Hoosier is a Hoosier is a Hoosier, and even if no one really knows what that means, the cohesiveness of the student body (and the pride in this term) can’t be ignored.

Getting Tickets

Depending on which sporting event you want tickets to, tickets are usually easy to get. Tickets to the men’s basketball games are in short supply, and the administration has recently been distributing fewer tickets than ever before. Many sporting events are free to watch, and no other sport has the universal demand of basketball. Call 1 (866) IUSPORTS for all tickets.

Best Place to Take a Walk

If by “walk,” you mean “power walk” or “feel the burn,” try the track at Woodlawn field. Otherwise, the arboretum is large and beautiful, as are the woods and pretty much anywhere else on campus or downtown Bloomington. You could ostensibly walk around all day and not see everything, and there are plenty of trails and sidewalks to facilitate your journey.
