Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The IUPD doesn’t want to deal with you any more than you want to deal with them, but if you ask the officers, they’ll tell you stories. One officer arrested a woman for public indecency because she was urinating on the sidewalk . . . within plain view of the police station. Another officer was driving behind a vehicle that wasn’t at all suspicious, until the driver, convinced he was being followed by a cop, poured the to-go cup full of vodka he was sipping from out the window. It happened to splatter on the windshield of the policeman behind him. The IUPD doesn’t spend time prowling the bars, waiting for drunken people to stumble home, but if you call attention to yourself by being a moron, you’re going to get nabbed. In other words, don’t be stupid, and you won’t get in trouble.

The student body doesn’t cease to participate in any extracurricular activities because of a fear of police, RAs, or the student judicial board, but knowing that there are indeed outlets designed to protect you from your own bad decision-making can leave time for rationale to set in. The cops catch a lot of people doing illegal things, but they don’t seem to put too much of a cramp in IU’s party style, particularly when it comes to alcohol. A force to be reckoned with? Hardly, but police will put students in their place if they must.

Not Too Bad

First time alcohol offenses usually just get let off with a warning, unless someone gets hurt or a party gets out of hand. But really if trophy bottles are not visual, alcohol is not smelled, and people are coherent, you're pretty much fine.

Moderately Strict

Students are free to do what they want, discreetly. Police and Resident Assistants are strict about drug and alcohol use. If caught, punishments are pretty severe. Other than that, there aren't many rules and regulations.

Police Are Everywhere

At IU there are cops that just prowl around at football games, looking to write people tickets for drinking. The tickets cost 400$ and require an alcohol education class. I've heard several stories about innocent people getting these tickets that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
