Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Diversity at IU has evolved and continues to adapt with the times. While there is still an obvious white majority on campus, the numbers are slowly shifting to include more students from various backgrounds. Everyone is considered equal here, whether you’re the only student from your particular background or one of 3,000. Everybody has the same opportunities, and it is up to the individual to go after the opportunities offered.

IU still has a long way to go to catch up with the diversity found in other schools, but the University is trying awfully hard to overcome the single-mindedness of some of the locals here and elsewhere in the nearby Bible Belt. Overall, though, minority students should feel just as comfortable here as anyone would, and there are plenty of organizations to reinforce that feeling.

ACP Composition and Literature Courses

I am currently a high school student who takes college courses through Indiana University. The environment at our Central Normal Campus is excellent. We have a count of one hundred percent Caucasian as our ethnicity at the CNC campus. We have plethora of students who have different religious views, but it all makes the class more diverse and interesting while class is in session. It's great because we are all respectable to everyone's beliefs or views.

Facts

Gay Pride

Gay pride is always well received on campus, allowing for students of all sexual orientation to live their lives without overt discrimination. IU has a GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) student support service center for students who have questions or need assistance from people who understand these issues. Also, IU recently hosted the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference in 2009.

Political Activity

IU has seen a great deal of political activity in the past years, and the students and teachers are not shy about sharing their beliefs. The 2008 election invoked a plethora of political discussions in public forums and classrooms. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Bill Clinton visited IU during the most recent primaries, and President Obama made a return visit during his presidential campaign. Those who enjoy politics and sharing their own views should not fear being ostracized on campus.

Economic Status

There is a large range of economic backgrounds among students, varying from those surviving almost entirely on loans and grants to those whose parents take care of the credit card tab. However, the majority of students fall right in the middle of the economic landscape, with an average car and some extra cash for beer, pizza, coffee, and a couple miscellaneous items every month. Many students nab a part time job in order to keep some extra cash coming in, which is never a bad idea if it doesn’t get in the way of studying.

Most Common Religions

Christianity is clearly predominant, and there are many Christian groups and clubs, but there are also representatives from all major religions on campus, with just as many groups and clubs.

Minority Clubs on Campus

These clubs are just as integral to the soul of IU as non-minority clubs and make themselves heard just as well. There’s a Latino fraternity, a Muslim Student Union, a Black Culture Center, and many other groups.
