Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In any large community, there will inevitably be a few bad apples thrown into the bunch. IU is no different. Luckily, Bloomington has two police departments to help keep residents safe—the Indiana University Police Department and the Bloomington Police Department. There’s also an Indiana State Police station just outside of campus for Monroe and the surrounding counties; if nothing else, the police presence around campus seems to deter criminals.

Students can access dorms only by key or ID card, which helps keep unwanted (or wanted) visitors out. Police regularly patrol campus and are quick to respond to a cry for help. Traveling alone on campus has never been much of a problem, because there always seems to be groups of students all over campus at most hours of the day. Safety concerns will mostly involve your fellow students, and at such a large school, it’s up to you to take preventative measures. If your last class isn’t over until 9:30 p.m. and you’re not comfortable walking home alone, call an escort. If you think you’re being followed on campus, use one of the blue-light phones. IU has made many accommodations to provide for the personal well-being of all Hoosiers, and it shows.

IU Safety

I feel that it is very safe on campus. There are many lights and buildings. Numbers to call to contact IUPD are posted many places.

IU Is Tobacco Free

IU is not tobacco free at all. Walking around campus I see people smoking multiple times a day.

It's a College Campus, Honestly

Of course, being a large campus of 30,000 students and being amid a small city, there is crime. You hear of the occasional vandalism, drunken assault, or more rarely, sexual assault. But I personally have never been victim, nor have any of my friends been victims, of a crime. There are a number of 'blue lights' on campus for emergencies, and the pathways are all well lit at night. I've never felt unsafe while walking around campus or even around own at night.

Facts

Did You Know?

Firearms are not allowed on campus, except during transportation to the gun range at the IMU. Skateboarding is also banned, due to damage caused to IU property.

Alcohol use in the dorms is strictly forbidden, except on certain floors or buildings housing students 21 and over.

On campus, sexual assault statistics have risen lately. Because of this, IUPD and the Bloomington community have instituted several programs to help prevent attacks of this nature.
