College Prowler Take

Deciding where to eat in Bloomington is always an adventure. The diversity of the student body invites an array of restaurateurs to the area, specializing in everything from Thai and Indian food to Japanese and Mediterranean cuisine. There’s never a shortage of delicious choices; the hardest part is figuring out what you’re in the mood for. Impressive restaurants unique to Bloomington include the Bombay House (an Indian restaurant close to campus), which has a lunch buffet during the week that could satiate the most intense hunger. There is also Michael’s Uptown Café, which offers a cozy atmosphere and fantastic food with a New Orleans kick. Try the eggs benedict for a great way to start the day. If more traditional American fare would hit the mark, Jimmy John’s makes quality subs “so fast you’ll freak,” and Brave New Deli has a wide variety of sandwich choices.

Of course, Bloomington houses the requisite fast food and chain restaurants as well, but part of the allure of a small town with a big school in the middle is the explosion of culture. A student could probably eat three times a day at a different local restaurant for a month without repeating. If you have a craving for a favorite food, Bloomington has the answer.

There are plenty of restaurants scattered around the town of Bloomington, and there are also a few within walking distance when on campus. These include Pizza Hut, Burger King, Qdoba, and Penn Station.

Most of the restaurants off campus...

Most of the restaurants off campus wouldn’t be able to compete in a big city atmosphere, but that’s expected from a college town. I won’t bad mouth anyone, but I will give you the names of the places I appreciate and you can draw your own conclusions. As far as Chinese food goes, Chow Bar, on Indiana near the 3rd street intersection, is the only respectable place in town. Other ethnic joints you’ll want to eat at include Domo (Japanese), Little Tibet, Shanti (Indian), and the Thai place at Kirkwood and Lincoln (Esan Thai). As for American food, try Truffles on College Mall (attached to the 56 Degree Bar next to Kroger), Scholar’s Inn on College (for desserts more than anything), Michael’s Uptown Cafe on Kirkwood near its intersection with Walnut, Big Mouth Subs on Walnut, and for breakfast, Gib & Denzil’s Restaurant on South Walnut by Bloomington South.
