Life as a Communication Major

I have really enjoyed being a Communications major because i have found that all my professors are extremely passionate about what they are teaching. They are very interested (and are often very accomplished) in their field and it makes you just as passionate in the subject. I also like how they have a very laid back yet informative approach to teaching. They really emphasize hands-on experience and real world exposure to help us learn, we are often taught through media, both new technologies (Youtube and new movies) as well as classic materials. I really like that I get a feel for the field I am in and how I have grown even more passionate about my major because it has been fulfilling. The reading can often be cumbersome and dry but the lectures and discussions are often very interesting, informative, and I learn the bulk of my knowledge from that, not through lectures but from our interactions with it. Overall, I really like the communications program at Indiana because they really help us get a feel for the field and really get us excited about it and give us experience working with it.

Total Balance

At Indiana University there is a balance between students who join sororities/fraternities and those who don't. I think this is great because even though a student is involved in Greek lifestyles they still have many friends outside that lifestyle. The interaction between Greek students and non-Greek students is also great because they can both experience each other's lifestyle if they hang out or invite each other to their own activities. In all the balance at IU is advantageous in many aspects.

Expect High Costs

It's not really hard to find an apartment. It's a good-sized city with lots of available housing. It's the cost of the housing that will get you. Even housing that's not what I would consider close to campus is really outrageous.

Calling All Bros

Given the option, I wouldn't choose Indiana University again. The potential for academic benefit is awesome, and the place is pretty diverse. That is, if you can handle all the doctor's kids, bros, and princesses that are here with you.

Too Much Greek

There's a lot of Greek life at IU, and it isn't received well by local populations, but the Greeks haven't yet noticed.

If You're Interested, Try It

I am a non-greek student but it's just not for me. A lot of students love that lifestyle. It's definitely worth trying if you have any interest at all, they are great for networking and they do a lot of philanthropic work.

As for how they are viewed by non greeks: they usually mind their own- I view them as pretty exclusive, they hang out with only themselves so they can be kind of snobby. And they are huge partiers, but that's normal.

Very Liberal

No matter the religion, gender, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, you will fit right in at IU. You will not be judged for who you are at IU because the school is so very diverse. Also, there are programs, extra-curriculars, and majors for all walks of life so you are bound to find something to devote your time to other than books or watching TV.

Housing is pretty good here. I lived in Ashton with a single room and an air conditioner which was nice. The only thing that could've been better was the distance from my classes.

The temperature does not really get below 0 in the winter, and compared to most of the Midwest, the snow is relatively low. The fall, summer, and spring are amazing!

Living on the Southeast Side of Campus

When I came to IU, I was an out-of-state student so I didn't specify where I wanted to live since I didn't know the difference. I wound up on the southeast edge of campus, which was a ridiculously long walk from classes. The dorm I lived in was referred to as the "ghetto" dorm because it did not have AC and because all of first-generation college students were housed there and were allowed to run rampant. The only redeeming factors were that I luckily landed on a floor with great girls, and made some amazing friends. Also, the dorm food is really varied, and good. Lots of healthy options.

Weather

For the most part the weather is great! Usually pretty warm, always seems to be sunny. Only downfall is when it rains, it POURS! It will rain nonstop for the entire day or two. When ice accumulates in the winter, they do not normally do a very good job of salting the sidewalks. However, as soon as the sun comes out and the temperature gets warmer, everyone in Bloomington hangs out on their porches.

Sports Sort of a Downer

Sports at IU are hyped up to be a great welcome and spirit chaser for the students, faculty and the residents of Bloomington. But in the end we are mostly disappointed by our losses which are huge.

A Variety at Its Best

Bloomington is blooming with college students that are in need for space to live in and Bloomington definitely give off that vibe. It offers a variety of apartments with space that rates from 200-3200 dollars a month depending on the space and how many individuals that live within the common space.

There are so many restaurants jampacked into Bloomington, that it would be nearly impossible to try every single one in your 4 years here. The price ranges, depending on where you go and there are so many dicounts and specials for students that it is defiantely worth trying as many as you can.

The Typical IU Guy

I don' think that there is any possible way to sum up the wide array of men that attend Indiana University, because the school is so large with every type of person. But if I had to average out the appearance of the guys here, it would be an A. There are so many typical "fratty" boys who are tools, but really hot. There are also your average, sports loving type of guy who are mostly pretty good looking as well. Partying is a pretty major deal to the majority of men up here though.

Drugs Are Abundant

There are a lot of drugs available at IU, but not necessarily everyone does them. It's very easy to get hooked up with almost any type of drug. Drinking is very widely accepted, a lot of people smoke cigarettes, more people smoke weed than you think, and other harder drugs are available, although i personally have never seen them used, just heard stories.

First Choice, Best Choice

IU was my first choice and only one of two colleges I applied to, and I absolutely do not regret this choice. The campus is beautiful, the other students are wonderful, and the professors are fun. Parties here are, of course, a big part of campus life, but you can easily find groups who don't do the party scene.

Greek Vs. Non-Greek

The Greek community is somewhat of a statement at IU. Many people feel as if they need to commit to the Greek life to have something to do during their social time. While I do not see it as an advantage or disadvantage, I have heard grumblings from non-Greeks about the Greek community. Labeling them as stuck-up, ditzy, or otherwise unapproachable. While I have not experienced this, I guess this is the impression my peers perceive.
