College Prowler Take
In any large community, there will inevitably be a few bad apples thrown into the bunch. IU is no different. Luckily, Bloomington has two police departments to help keep residents safe—the Indiana University Police Department and the Bloomington Police Department. There’s also an Indiana State Police station just outside of campus for Monroe and the surrounding counties; if nothing else, the police presence around campus seems to deter criminals.
Students can access dorms only by key or ID card, which helps keep unwanted (or wanted) visitors out. Police regularly patrol campus and are quick to respond to a cry for help. Traveling alone on campus has never been much of a problem, because there always seems to be groups of students all over campus at most hours of the day. Safety concerns will mostly involve your fellow students, and at such a large school, it’s up to you to take preventative measures. If your last class isn’t over until 9:30 p.m. and you’re not comfortable walking home alone, call an escort. If you think you’re being followed on campus, use one of the blue-light phones. IU has made many accommodations to provide for the personal well-being of all Hoosiers, and it shows.

Security is very good. The campus police department regularly patrols campus, and there are plenty of emergency call boxes around. As far as I can tell, the campus is very well-lit at night. Rape and other violent crimes are very low for a campus of nearly 40,000 students. |

I feel very secure and safe on...
I feel very secure and safe on IU’s campus. I lived in Foster Harper my freshman year, and there were always IU police around on the weekends, which is when most of us went out to party and such. There is always a safety hotline that you can call if you need a ride, like if you’re stuck at a party and don’t have any money for a cab. The dorms had excellent security, and there was never a time when I didn’t feel 100 percent satisfied with this particular aspect of IU. |

I think security and safety at IU...
I think security and safety at IU is good. No complaints here. Of course, you have your occasional break-ins and things, but I think for a campus with 40,000 people, they do a great job. |

I really think that IU is a safe...
I really think that IU is a safe school. Any school will warn you to be careful. I don’t walk on campus by myself when it’s dark, but that’s really a precaution I would take anywhere. It’s also best if you go to parties with other people so you can make sure everyone gets home okay. There are a lot of people that go to IU and, with that comes people that you can’t trust. |

There’s a safety escort van that...
There’s a safety escort van that you can call and they will pick you up and take you where you need to go if you are scared to walk. You can also request someone to walk with you to wherever you need to go. We even have a midnight bus which we lovingly refer to as the ‘Drunk Bus’ that picks people up from bars and takes them home so they don’t have to walk. All these services are provided at no additional cost. |

Did You Know?
Firearms are not allowed on campus, except during transportation to the gun range at the IMU. Skateboarding is also banned, due to damage caused to IU property.
Alcohol use in the dorms is strictly forbidden, except on certain floors or buildings housing students 21 and over.
On campus, sexual assault statistics have risen lately. Because of this, IUPD and the Bloomington community have instituted several programs to help prevent attacks of this nature.
