Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Not everybody can bring a car when they come to college, although that may be the easiest way to get around. IU and the Bloomington community understand the difficulties with transportation and makes things less of a pain for those who can’t drive. It may take a little practice if you’ve never ridden the bus before, but campus and the surrounding area is covered with bus stops that can take you all over town. If you’re patient and don’t mind taking a little longer—or a lot longer—to get where you’re going, then the bus system is the best thing for you. There is also an extensive bus system that only serves campus, but unlike the Bloomington Transit buses, it costs everyone money. You can buy a pass for about $100, but most people just get used to walking to class, no matter how far away their dorms are.

If you are trying to get away, there are ways to do that, too. There are online boards for ride exchanges; often, you can find someone headed where you want to go and can catch a ride in exchange for some gas money. If sharing a car with a stranger doesn’t appeal to you, there’s always the shuttle to the airport (if you are flying out of state), which is reliable but slow. The shuttle runs on a set schedule, and you may have to get to the airport a few hours before your flight is scheduled to leave. Taxis are great for getting around on the weekends (especially if your designated driver has accidentally gotten drunk), but they can be expensive. There are options for everyone, whether you’re supplied with a car or not, but the best route may be to make friends with someone who owns a car (and mooch a little) and save yourself some hassle.

Utilize the Buses

Buses are frequently running and go all over town. Thanks to modern technology campus buses can be tracked on a smart phone app. Campus and city buses are free to university students. There are also shuttles that take people to airports in Indianapolis.

Take a Bus

If you want to get around campus and not have to do a lot of walking, then taking a campus bus is your best option at Indiana University. There are several different routes the buses take and several buses for most buses. Riding some buses are inconvenient though because they don't always stick to there schedules and can be late. There are very few routes that take you to the dorms that are at the very distant end of campus and those routes tend to only have one or two buses running on them. All in all though the buses are very convenient and if your a student you can ride them for free.

Best Way to Get Around

The bus system here at Indiana University is great. There are numerous buses that get you most places around Bloomington and campus. The big issue that I have with the buses is how crowded they can get. But that's not exactly the buses fault. There's just many students that attend Indiana University. Other than that, if you know the schedule, and have your ID card for a free ride, there's usually no problems!
