College Prowler Take
The most prevalent crimes are liquor-law violations and petty theft. But other than that, Ames is a very, very safe community. ISU does a really good job of patrolling campus and making sure that students feel safe at all times. Many feel safer walking alone at night on Iowa State’s campus than at other campuses they have been to. That says a lot for ISU and the measures they take to make sure people feel safe here. Although many students hate the Department of Public Safety for issuing an incredible number of parking tickets, they do recognize that DPS does manage to remain effective, as the levels of crime on campus are low and generally non-threatening. Of course, there is crime, as there is anywhere. But the vast majority of it is not life-threatening, and the amount is so insignificant that students have no qualms about venturing out on campus alone or at night.

The crime rate is very low, and I feel very safe moving around campus at all times. Some girls do not always feel safe alone on weekends, though.

Security and safety is not a problem on campus. We have an alert system if anything should happen. If you don't feel safe, you can call the Help Van to take you home, call to have someone walk you home, or, in an emergency, call the campus police.

ISU’s Department of Public Safety is everywhere on campus. Emergency buttons are located across campus, most residence halls are locked, and key cards are required to access the buildings. All dorm rooms, and the women’s bathrooms in them, are locked for safety reasons. And if you are anywhere on campus, you can call DPS to have someone escort you to wherever you are going on campus. If you are in the parking lot, chances are, DPS will be along shortly ticketing cars parked where they aren’t supposed to be, anyway. You can see DPS on campus 24 hours a day. |

Security is pretty non-intrusive on campus; you get hassled very little going about your daily business. However, most students feel safe on and around campus, and if you don’t want to walk around alone at night, DPS will give you a ride where you need to go for free. |

I never felt threatened or unsafe on campus. It’s pretty well lit at night, and ISU has an escort service if you want company. I never used it, but I’ve heard it’s pretty good. The main function of DPS seems to be to try to find every possible way to ticket and fine you for parking violations. |
