College Prowler Take

Iowa weather lacks popularity amongst students and residents alike. As many students mention, it lacks predictability and has all four seasons at drastic temperatures. Students will find that until winter break, they will need shorts, T-shirts, pants, jackets, sweatshirts, sandals, tennis shoes, and possibly boots and a winter coat. After break, they can probably get by without shorts, but need more winter clothes to get them through the season. Students need clothes for both cold and hot weather, including winter coats, umbrellas, and possibly boots. Jackets just don’t cut it in the winter.

The highlight of Iowa State is not its weather. If a nice climate is an important factor in your choice of school, you may think of going elsewhere. The campus is beautiful, though, and there are some gorgeous days mixed in with the rain, snow, and humidity. The fall and spring especially can be nice before they get too cold or too hot. Overall, the weather is temperamental.

The weather is mostly hot and sticky in late summer and early fall. It's very rainy throughout the year, and snowy and cold in the winter and mid-spring. You want to have many layers on in the fall and winter when it hits below zero.

It's Iowa, so we go from hot, hot summers to frigid cold winters. Bring your warmest winter coat, gloves, and scarf, but be sure you have shorts and Ts for April and May. Bring an umbrella, too—fall and spring bring random bouts of rain.

The weather in Iowa fluctuates so heavily that one day it can be 70 and sunny, and the next could be 30 and snowy. The winters are very brisk, which makes walking from class to class a nuisance.

Iowa weather is unpredictable....

Iowa weather is unpredictable. Early autumn is hot and humid. By the end of October, it is usually cooler, and in some years, has snowed. The winters are typically very cold and snowy, and spring is rainy and chilly. Boots and a very warm winter coat are necessary to survive the winter, and an umbrella is nice for autumn and spring when walking around campus. Weather will change from one day to the next, so it is smart to check the daily forecast before dressing and leaving for class.
