Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Despite the talent some of the teams at IC have, students fail to attend games or show any form of school spirit. For the students who don’t want to commit to joining a varsity team, IC offers various intramural and club sports that are very popular. It’s hard to get excited about being a Bomber, though. Without a doubt, the most well-attended sporting event at IC is the November football game between IC and the State University of New York at Cortland. Known as the "Cortaca Jug," which Sports Illustrated has called the “biggest little game in the nation,” this rivalry game brings almost every IC student to the stadium.

Other than this one Saturday afternoon, support for the teams is almost nonexistent. If someone wants to go to a school that is big on athletics, IC is probably not the best place. Administrators tried to increase school spirit by coming up with a new mascot, but students were dissatisfied and this failed. However, with Cortaca being the only big athletic event, students definitely take advantage of it and come out with a lot of school spirit.

One Big Game a Year

We have the Cortaca Jug once a year which is a really big football game. It is around this time that school spirit really is brought to life. Other than that I don't really attend other sports related activities.

D3 School

Ithaca is not big on the athletics because we are a D3 school. Our football team is good and we have the big rival game against SUNY Cortland every year which is fun. But I do not attend any of these events so I don't know.

Sports at Ithaca College

Although Ithaca College is well known in upstate New York for their annual Cortaca Jug football match against SUNY Cortland, there seems to be a lack of school spirit at other sporting events. Our facilities are rather good, and we have a very large gym, two swimming pools, and a recently built Athletics and Entertainment Center which boasts a large stadium and track. Many students are involved in club or team sports that vary from lacrosse and field hockey to baseball and football.

School Spirit

While everyone on campus has an IC sweatshirt, school spirit is not as prevalent as it is at other schools. Because IC is only a Division III school in athletics, the teams tend to get overlooked. If more students paid attention to the fine talent that IC athletes have, then more students would paint their faces blue and gold and yell, “Go Bombers!” Ithaca College definitely sees its share of school spirit at the Cortaca Jug. Whether the game takes place at IC or at Cortland, there are plenty of IC students dressed and painted in blue and gold to support the team.

Getting Tickets

Students can get into any sporting event free of charge. With low attendance at many games, you’re usually guaranteed a seat. Tickets for Cortaca Jug are free if the game is at Ithaca, and there's a small fee if the game is held at Cortland. It is imperative to get tickets early, though, because they go fast!

Best Place to Take a Walk

Most of the local gorges have beautiful trails that are the perfect activity for a nice day. Try Taughannock Falls and Buttermilk Falls.
