College Prowler Take
It’s extremely frustrating to find out that ResNet, the campus network, is down, when you need to do research for the next day. ResNet usually goes down weekly, and in an age where students use Instant Messenger to make plans instead of walking down the hall, the absence of the Internet can almost be debilitating. Professors utilize the technology in class and some post assignments on a course Web site called Blackboard, an interactive program accessible from any computer. Every student receives an e-mail account, and it’s usually necessary to check it a few times a day. While most bring their own computer, it’s not necessary because of the many computers on campus. The Office of Information Technology Services tells students they will find a solution to the network problem quickly, and when it does work, it usually works well. IC is also building a wireless network that will eventually provide wireless Internet services across the entire campus. Black-and-white laser printing at the labs is free, so if you worry about the high cost of printer ink cartridges just go to a lab when you need to print something. Color printing is not available, however. A couple labs are open around the clock, which is very convenient for procrastinators.

Whenever I go to the computer lab, there’s usually at least one computer open. I think students should bring their own computer. I would be lost without mine because I do all of my homework on it, check my e-mail on an obsessive basis, and also stay connected with people. |

My experience with the network,...
My experience with the network, ResNet, has been poor, and most students would agree with me about this. The moment I stepped on campus in August, we were informed that the network was down due to a virus, and all computers had to be disinfected before the network was turned back on. Throughout the following months the network was constantly faced with problems, which caused headaches to many people. |

I don’t use the computer labs. I own my own laptop, and I would highly recommend doing the same. I take my laptop with me to the library, or to meetings to type up notes or papers. It’s really handy to have something that’s portable. |

Students should bring their own computers. The labs usually are crowded and the network is often excruciatingly slow. |

ResNet works most of the time, but it’s a source of great frustration for many students, and they’re hoping to make it better. Although the computer labs are nice and there are plenty of them, it’s much more convenient to have your own computer in your room. |
