College Prowler Take

With 88 percent of IC students classifying themselves as white, the College is far from being racially diverse. Some students complain about a lack of ideological diversity, others think the college needs to attract more international students. From a U.S. geographic perspective, students come from all over the country to attend IC, leading to a good mix of views and opinions from within the states. Most students come from middle to upper-middle class households, but students’ religions and sexual orientations seem to be very diverse.

Through efforts like the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar Program, the College is trying to attract a more diverse student body. Departments such as the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity strive to bring and showcase diversity on campus. The school sponsors different events such as Latino Heritage Month, Black History Month, and “Gaypril” to increase awareness of others on campus. IC also offers various culture courses, trying to fill the void that remains on campus. With all of the work IC is putting towards creating a more diverse campus, it should pay off sometime in the near future.

This campus is very diverse when it comes to people’s interests and sexuality. However, from a racial, religious, and ideological standpoint, there is lacking diversity. It’s okay, though, you roll with it and bring out what’s missing in your own way. That’s how Ithaca College students do it.

The College insists it’s very diverse, and I suppose it is compared to other schools, but minorities still tend to stand out a bit. About half the black students seem to be from Jamaica, and there are a ton of Bulgarians, as well. I don’t find too many Hispanics, though there are a fair amount of Asians and Europeans.

Facts

Economic Status

Most students on campus can be classified as middle- to upper-middle class, but like any place, you find a wide variety of backgrounds. You will see students parking their Mercedes SUVs next to used cars that have seen better days.

Gay Pride

Every April, the College celebrates "Gaypril" a month-long event that strives to make the public more accepting and increase awareness of homosexual students. During this month, the Rainbow Pride flag flies on a flagpole in the center of campus. The College has a Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Education, Outreach, and Services, which strives to make the campus a better environment for LGBT people. Many professors have "Safe Place" signs on their doors. The purpose of these signs is to make LGBT students feel more comfortable discussing issues concerning their sexuality. Groups such as BIGAYLA and Created Equal have a presence on campus. Many speakers and movies are sponsored by these groups.

Minority Clubs

Groups such as the African Latino Society and Asian Culture Club sponsor events and bring speakers to campus to try to increase awareness about other races and cultures.

Most Common Religions

Muller Chapel holds services for Catholic, Jewish, and Protestant faiths. There's a multitude of churches off campus, as well, where students may attend masses. Students for Christ and Chi Alpha also have visible roles on campus.

Political Activity

The city of Ithaca is known as one of the most liberal cities in the country, but all aspects of the political spectrum are visible in student organizations. Although easily about 85% of the student population here is liberal, there are clubs on campus for all political affiliations, including IC Republicans. Other clubs include IC Democrats, Students for a Just Peace, and Amnesty International. When Barack Obama won the election in 2008, the celebrating went on all night and into the next day. A huge number of students gathered by the Textor ball to celebrate together, and some students in off-campus housing even set off fireworks in their backyards. During political events such as this, the liberal partiality here is evident.
