Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most of the buildings on Ithaca College's campus are fairly old looking, with a look of dirty cement and faded paint. The dreadful winter weather can make the buildings seem even more unappealing than they are. With that being said, there are several buildings that have recently been redone. One campus bright spot is outside of Dillingham, the theater building, where beautiful fountains spray high into the air. When the sun is shining, this is a great sight to come across. Unfortunately, the fountains are only on from summer up until fall break.

The Roy H. Park School of Communications has state-of-the-art facilities, including the most updated Apple computers and software. Although many of the classrooms in the Park School do not have windows, the overall feel of the school is very aesthetically pleasing. Park has a plethora of media resources for students, including a dark room and television and radio equipment. The Center for Natural Sciences has extensive laboratories, while the Center for Health Sciences has a speech and hearing clinic, physical and occupational therapy clinics, and a wellness center. Whalen Center for Music has recording facilities and practice rooms. The College even has an observatory, which is the perfect place to look out into the sky. The business school houses the Center for Trading and Analysis of Financial Instruments, and the lag time between the NY Stock Exchange and IC’s trading data is one-fourth of a second. The business school also has mahogany lockers and is a prime example of environmental stewardship, incorporating the highest principles of sustainable design.

Although a lot of the buildings are older, they are well cared for and in good condition for the most part. The new buildings, such as the Business School are phenomenal. I spend a lot of time studying there because it has food, comfortable study spaces, and a great view.

Odd Beauty

Ithaca may not be your typical brick building beauty school but the character of the 70s style architecture gives the school personality. Ithaca recently built a new 21 lane pool and sport court that drags in the old style architecture with new style beauty. All the buildings are really accessible for athletes in non-athletes.

"Green" Initiatives

The Dorothy D. and Roy H. Park Center for Business and Sustainable Enterprise was among the first 100 buildings in the world to receive platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, the highest level granted by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Favorite Things To Do

Many students enjoy going to concerts at the music school or plays done by the theater department. The College brings in many speakers and performers, which also bode well with students. The campus group IC After Dark sponsors theme nights on the weekends as an alternative to alcohol, which are always well attended by students.

From grabbing some coffee, watching a film on the weekend, listening to a speaker, or attending an IC After Dark event, most students can find something to do on campus. IC doesn't have the many amenities that larger schools offer, but with the surrounding city, no student ever has the excuse that he or she can't find something to do.
