Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When looking out over the campus landscape, blue-light emergency phones are scattered all around, and most students say they have never felt unsafe. While the Ithaca area is relatively safe, the Public Safety officers work hard to keep the campus secure. To keep everyone informed of the incidents, the college newspaper, the Ithacan, runs a weekly log that includes what officers responded to in the last week. Additionally, the school's electronic update system sends out an update if there is an incident on campus. If someone doesn’t feel comfortable walking around at night, the Student Auxiliary Safety Patrol (SASP) assists students getting around. The dorms are locked after 9 p.m., and residents need a key to get in.

Like the college town area, IC has a very low crime rate, and Public Safety takes every precaution to keep it that way. Once a student calls with a problem, the officers are very responsive, and they don’t take any issue lightly. The only real problems are incidents of car vandalism or larceny. Students still need to use common sense. Valuables such as money, jewelry, or laptops should always be safeguarded. While some looking to have parties on campus feel that Public Safety and SASP are just there to ruin weekend fun, the officers’ goals are to protect both students and the campus community. The dedicated staff tries to protect students from being victims or from taking part in reckless behavior. All in all, people generally feel very safe at IC.

Stupidity

Walking around campus is generally safe no matter what time of day and blue lights are readily accessible. The major problem with safety and security at IC is the stupid behavior of the students. People steal food from communal fridges, laptops in lounges, and even once there was a car stolen off campus (it was later recovered, but still). On a regular basis there are dumpster fires and various kinds of vandalism all around campus. It's ridiculous. So while personal safety is strong, the stupidity is high.

Really Safe

The crime rate is pretty low on campus, we get one or two major reports a semester, but even they aren't too bad. There are blue lights posted all around the campus and they are placed so that you can see another one from where you are standing. I always feel safe walking around campus at night.
