Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s sometimes nearly impossible to find a parking place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on campus, and when one is found, it’s usually a bit of a walk to class. When the snow is plowed, the piles of it take away even more of the available parking spots. In an effort to keep freshmen from bringing cars to campus, the first-year students must pay $500 for a parking permit, almost five times what the upperclassmen pay. First-year students usually only bring cars if they live relatively close to campus and need to commute home for breaks.

IC students are somewhat lucky because many schools won’t allow freshmen to have cars on campus at all. However, although IC does allow it, all freshmen are required to park in designated lots, and the freshman lots are very inconvenient for those first-year students who live in the Towers or Terraces because the lots are on the other side of campus. If you park in a lot you’re not supposed to, you’re almost guaranteed to have a ticket awaiting you underneath your windshield wiper when you get back to your car. The parking situation could be worse, but it’s manageable. When you have to be some place at a certain time, just make sure to allot time to find a place to park.

It's All About Timing...

There are plenty of spots on campus, but if you want one close to your classes, dorm, etc. it's all about timing. Parking can be rough during those peak class hours, especially when the best spots are obviously given to the faculty during the day. Overall not bad though. However, I will note that freshman get the shaft in terms of parking. Their lots of are far out of the way and much more expensive than upperclassmen. I think freshmen pay about $500 for a spot for the SEMESTER! while all other students pay about $200 for the year.

Expensive

Finding a parking space is not necessarily troubling. There are always random parking spaces throughout the day and night and throughout certain parking lots surrounding dorm halls, just be careful to not get a ticket because those spaces may belong to a student already or against any other parking regulation. As a freshman, having a car on campus is extremely expensive (could be as much as $500), but as an upperclassman it can be as low as $130.

Parking

Permit costs are outrageous for freshman-$500. For upperclassmen they are cheaper but not by alot. I think they are between $100-$200. Tickets are $20. A car isn't really needed on campus because there are buses that run through every hour to take you into town and you won't need a car at all to get to classes if you live on campus. But it can be very convenient. With the buses you often need to plan it out and have a lot of time to get where you're going.

Getting a Parking Permit

Within the first week of classes, or whenever you bring your vehicle to campus, go to the Public Safety building located on the north end of campus and fill out the necessary paperwork. For the first few days of classes, be prepared for a long line.
