College Prowler Take
When looking out over the campus landscape, blue-light emergency phones are scattered all around, and most students say they have never felt unsafe. While the Ithaca area is relatively safe, the Public Safety officers work hard to keep the campus secure. To keep everyone informed of the incidents, the college newspaper, the Ithacan, runs a weekly log which includes what officers responded to in the last week. If someone doesn’t feel comfortable walking around at night, the Student Auxiliary Safety Patrol assists students getting around. The dorms are locked after 9 p.m., and residents need a key to get in.
IC has a very low crime rate, and Public Safety takes every precaution to keep it that way. Once a student calls with a problem, the officers are very responsive, and they don’t take any issue lightly. The only real problems are incidents of car vandalism. Students still need to use common sense. Valuables such as money, jewelry, or laptops should always be safeguarded. On the other hand, some have the opinion that Public Safety is just trying to ruin weekend fun, but the officers’ goal is to protect the campus community. The dedicated staff tries to protect students from being victims or taking part in reckless behavior. All in all, most think there are few places that exist where people can feel safer.

I definitely feel safe on campus most of the time. This year there have been two incidences where I got a little scared: there was an armed robbery and a student drowned. We do have a great emergency system though.

I feel safe on campus all the time. I frequently find myself walking alone on campus because of various meetings and such, but I never feel threatened and uncomfortable when I do so. |

For the most part, I feel really safe on campus. I have never worried about walking back to my room, even at 3 a.m.; though I do keep my eyes open on the weekends when the drunks are out. |

Ithaca College takes safety on...
Ithaca College takes safety on campus very seriously. I have always felt secure. When I walk back from the library or another dorm late at night, blue emergency lights are always visible in every direction that I look. I also see police cars driving around at all hours of the night to assure everyone’s safety. When a crime is committed, action is taken immediately, and the proper precautions are taken so that it does not happen again. |

Did You Know?
There are more than 70 blue-light phones on the campus, and an emergency phone is located at each of the three college directional maps. All phones are tested weekly.
The sworn officers at IC are certified by New York, and officers’ training is the same as any municipal police officer or county sheriff’s deputy.
