College Prowler Take
When students first arrive on campus in August, they find 80 degree weather and blue skies. With beautiful flowers and manicured lawns, students complete their homework sitting comfortably on the green grass. The fountains produce a light mist that refreshes students as they walk by, often cooling them down from the hot temperatures. In only weeks, however, Ithaca’s beautiful landscape becomes anything but inviting. Snow flurries are seen before fall break, and students bring their winter coats with them in August. After fall break, the fountains are turned off, the flowers are uprooted, and the plows are ready in case of significant snowfall. In the middle of winter, wind chills reach 20 or 30 degrees below zero. A good winter coat, a hat, gloves, a scarf, and waterproof shoes with traction are all needed to brave the campus. During spring break, students bring back their sandals and shorts. In April, as the daffodils and tulips bloom, students venture from their dorm rooms into the outside world. It’s back to sitting on the grass, taking in the campus views, and eating lunch outside. The weather is so nice that it makes students want to forget about the time they spent in the “Arctic” and convince them that just maybe Ithaca isn’t as bad of a place they thought it was in January.

In the beginning of the year it’s not too bad, but you’ll need a fan during the August and September heat because the dorms aren’t air conditioned. Once it starts snowing, it pretty much doesn’t stop until the end of the year. The snow takes forever to melt because it pretty much stays cold from November or December until April or May. Basically, a lot of warm clothing. The wind is what makes it so cold most of the time, and rain is far from uncommon. Don’t expect too much sun. |

If you attend Ithaca, you should learn to like cold weather. I would recommend a good pair of boots and a warm coat from Lands End or Columbia. Long underwear wouldn’t hurt either, if you plan to go sledding or ice skating. Bring T-shirts, also, as the dorms tend to get very warm. |

The weather changes every five minutes. It is perfect fall weather—cool and crisp. Winters are brutal, with cold winds, ice, and snow, but it can be a lot of fun. Spring weather arrives in mid-April. Bring all types of clothes because, like I said, you never know what temperature it will be in Ithaca. |

Welcome to the winter. It’s beautiful, but it can definitely get cold. I have gotten used to it, and so long as it’s not windy, I don’t feel it. I like to wear layers because they keep the building well heated, so I need to be able to strip down upon entrance. |

Cold, windy, rainy, and occasionally, amazingly beautiful. Bring it all—especially a scarf, gloves, boots, and pants you don’t mind getting salty. |
