College Prowler Take
JMU athletics isn’t known worldwide for its talent and success. However, students agree that they can still have school spirit without a winning team. Homecoming at JMU is a riot, and a source of plenty of purple and gold pride, even if the home football team may score more bruises than points. Older students take a bittersweet trip down memory lane, remembering the days when the football team was worth writing home about. Younger students, however, have developed a grudging fondness for their win-challenged Duke Dogs. If you really need to root for a team that wins once in a while, follow water polo, archery, or one of the other surprisingly talented but less-mainstream teams at JMU. Or better yet, form your own team. JMU has the facilities, the manpower, and the fan base to create a largely popular and successful intramural infrastructure. So hop on the bandwagon. You could even give your soon-to-be-wildly-successful team a more ferocious name than the Duke Dogs. Maybe something large that clobbers or claws, instead of a small canine that runs around and growls.

One thing that really sucks here...
One thing that really sucks here is that our football team is less than great. They really try hard, and once in a while, they’ll win, but it’s really not very often. The good thing about JMU is that people have tons of school spirit anyway. Lots of people still show up to watch the games. And other sports like hockey and basketball are more successful. Intramurals are pretty popular here. I played soccer last year, and I really want to try out more because they are a lot of fun. Intramurals are a good way to make new friends, too; maybe that’s why people like them so much. |

The stuff that really matters,...
The stuff that really matters, like football, really sucks here. I sort of wish I would have gone somewhere with a good team, because I really like a good football game. But, I’ve played some intramural sports, and they’re good for releasing the manly aggression, too. |

Varsity sports are around, but I don’t think any of them are exceptionally good or high ranked. However, there’s a lot of school spirit anyway. Intramural sports are really popular, and they are a lot of fun. Since you can pick coed and the level, you can be as serious or as laid-back as you want with it. |

I was kind of disappointed when I moved here because the JMU football team really isn’t that great. My school freshman year had a decent football team, and I miss the unity that a winning team can bring to a school. However, JMU kids still have school spirit without a football team to rally behind. Everybody loves the purple and gold! And there are other varsity teams like field hockey, soccer, and archery that are really good. Intramural sports seem to be almost more popular than the varsity ones. There is a huge variety to choose from for every interest and level. |

Varsity sports aren’t very big; however, many people participate in IM sports. JMU has a pretty big IM program. You can do anything from water polo to ultimate Frisbee. |

Gyms and Facilities
- Bridgeforth Stadium - Also know as Showker Field, this complex, built in 1975, has approximately 13,559 permanent seats. Originally named JMU Stadium, it was renamed in 1990 for William E. Bridgeforth, former member of the JMU Board of Visitors, and in 2003 the field was named in honor of JMU benefactor Zane Showker. In 2004, the facility added a new scoreboard with video features.
- Convocation Center - The 7,612 seating “Convo Center” was first opened in 1982 in order to host intercollegiate basketball games, concerts and large meetings. The building was the first to be constructed across Interstate 81 from the original campus and has been the speaking center for many prominent figures that have come to JMU, including Barrack Obama in 2008.
- Godwin Hall - Made up of Sinclair Gymnasium and the Savage Natatorium, Godwin was completed in 1972 and is now the center for a number of JMU majors, including the School of Theater and Dance, as well as the Kinsiology Department. In addition to being used for classrooms, the Sinclair Gym contains 5,000 seats, while the Savage Natatorium holds an Olympic-sized pool with 800 seats.
- UREC - This facility has it all: work-out machines, basketball courts, numerous weight machines and free weights, rooms for group classes, a pool and steam room, plus even a rock climbing wall. In addition to these free utilities, students can rent equipment (including camping gear) for a small deposit, which they get back once they return the equipment. While students decide what to do first, they can even check out the smoothie bar for a number of delicious options.
