JMU has recently cracked down on the spate of underage drinking and drug use widely adopted by the JMU student body. Recently, JMU introduced a strike system that penalizes students for visibly engaging in illegal activities. When you get caught drinking the first time, your parents are informed by letter. The second and third times can bring a more severe punishment. JMU is trying to bolster the message that underage drinking is, in fact, illegal under the law.
Campus police have also stepped up on patrolling the apartments and dorms, especially if a noise violation is imminent. There are also cases of undercover police that investigate drug use. Students tread carefully when inside their dorms and usually wait until they’re at an apartment or house for partying. Most of the time, the campus police simply oversee the current state-of-affairs, with Halloween and Saint Patrick’s Day being the only exceptions.
Campus strictness also comes in another form: parking enforcement. Police seem to be hovered around any and all metered parking and illegal parking spots. If you decide to run into Festival to grab dinner, do not make the mistake of parking near a fire hydrant. Police seem to be especially stringent and ruthless when giving out tickets.
