College Prowler Take
Campus police care about the students and the campus, but there’s only so much they can do when hundreds of students throw parties every weekend. Most of the time, they just hang around, look tough, and break parties up. Often, they will also dole out noise violations to the hosts. The police intervene the most when a student is making a scene or if they are a danger to themselves or others. Although drugs are not a prominent problem on campus, students also say police crack down on drug violations with extra vigor. Parties aside, students better beware of parking illegally. The parking police hand out tickets like coupons. Parking illegally can mean anything from staying too long in metered parking, to parking in a fire lane, to putting flashers on in order to run into Festival to grab dinner. The parking police are merciless in their ticketing crusades. They do not care how long it’s been since you’ve had a pretzel sandwich from PC Dukes, or if you are running in to retrieve your umbrella from class on the rainiest day of the year. All they see is flashing lights, and like a cheetah in sight of a gazelle, they close in for the kill.

Campus police don’t tolerate drugs on campus at all, which I think is wonderful. JMU’s judicial system is one of the best, in my opinion. |

I have been at a few parties that have gotten broken up, but most of them didn’t end in any trouble. A couple times, the police will write up a noise violation and kick everyone out. But basically if you’re not causing trouble, they’ll just let you walk away. They probably realize they can’t really do much when there are dozens of half-drunk people scurrying around. I think they really do care, though, and if they saw someone being really, really drunk, they would do something. |

The police are jerks about writing...
The police are jerks about writing noise violations, but they don’t really bust anybody except the people who own the apartment or house. When they bust a party, they pretty much just tell everybody to scatter. They won’t really bother you, unless you’re being a dumb jerk and walking around all loud and drunk. Then, they probably have a reason to arrest you. |

Most of the experiences I’ve had...
Most of the experiences I’ve had with the police have been when they come break up a party. They really can’t do a whole lot because if they busted one person, they’d have to bust the other hundred, so they just make everyone leave. When it comes to writing noise violations, I think they hand those out more regularly. And when it comes to parking, you’d better watch out! Campus police hand out parking violations like the world’s going to end tomorrow. |

I haven’t really experienced them much. They seem fairly slack about drinking, though. |
