College Prowler Take
Most students zip over to a computer to check e-mails, do last-minute research, type papers, or access the Blackboard Web site (the ever-popular place for profs to put course documents, pertinent information, and grades). There is also a notorious crowd who comes in to sign on to AIM and monopolize computers for much longer than the average e-mail or Blackboard checkers. You can try rolling your eyes at them, or making small sighing sounds over their shoulder (many people do!) but most of the time you will get no response. Apparently, IM is just that fun. The majority of students at JMU toted their personal computers or laptops from home. However, those without shouldn’t feel hindered at JMU by their lack of a computer. Labs are easily accessible, large enough to accommodate the general student population, and in various locations throughout campus. Sometimes, you might find yourself eagerly awaiting a computer in one of the busier labs, like the one in Carrier Library. It never fails, however, that within five minutes or so, someone will vacate, and you can go in for the kill. The busiest times in most of the labs are around midday, when everyone is out and about, taking care of business. Rush hour or not, finding a computer to use on campus should rarely be an unpleasant experience.

Definitely bring your own...
Definitely bring your own computer. Carrier Library has its moments where you can find an open computer, but it gets really crowded around exam periods. The new library is also really nice and big and has a lot of computers, but it can get crowded. If you really want stuff done, you should have your own computer.

Generally the computer network is efficient, however, I do have a problem with losing Internet connection sometimes. As far as computer labs go, they only really fill up during mid-terms and finals. Other than that, they tend to be pretty open and available for anyone to use during the hours of operation. It isn't really necessary to bring your own computer.

I have my own computer so I don’t use the computers here very often. I would recommend having your own for convenience and reliability. |

I didn’t have a computer my freshman year because I couldn’t afford one. So, needless to say, I depended on the campus computers. Most of the time, I did just fine, except for the occasional network mishap, which affects the computers sometimes. Sometimes, I did have to wait for computers, but not that often. Now that I have my own computer, though, I like it a lot better. It’s a laptop, too, which I think is more convenient. |

Computer technology and...
Computer technology and availability at JMU is excellent. Especially in the ISAT College, there are literally computers in every room and on most hallways and study lounges. Wireless access is available in most of the building, so notepad and laptop accessibility is excellent. Due to the many labs and computer lounges throughout campus, it’s not completely necessary to have a personal computer. |

A team of four James Madison University computing students recently won first place in the national Microsoft Windows Challenge competition, which was held this year with the theme “Make the World a Safer Place.” The team snatched the $4,000 first place prize with an airport security checkpoint device designed to sense and identify potential high-security risks posed by baggage or passengers, according to www.jmu.edu.
