College Prowler Take
The drug of choice at JMU is alcohol. Many students don’t consider alcohol to be a drug, but they also seem to depend on it as if it were one. Students have taken notice of the large amount of partying that goes on around the Harrisonburg vicinity. They also note that the majority of people at JMU seem to be involved, at some level, in the party scene. JMU’s party scene is out in the open, and most people seem to like it that way. However, most people also admit to not feeling horribly pressured to be involved in the scene if it doesn’t suit their fancy. In addition to alcohol, marijuana is used on a regular basis. Often, when walking into a party, faint wisps of pot smoke will waft towards you on a breeze. Following that breeze to its source, you can almost always find a designated room in the house where people are hanging out and toking up. Students are more likely to admit to their weed-smoking habits, to display their pipes, and to want to “share the love” with other party attendees. Hardcore drugs are seldom spoken of, but like any other college community, they are doubtlessly present. At JMU, they are kept very hush-hush.

Drugs? What drugs? Who am I...
Drugs? What drugs? Who am I kidding? There are drugs here, and if you say you don’t use them, you’re lying. There’s not much hard stuff that I know of, but it does happen. Mostly, pot and alcohol are the things to do at parties. |

Lots and lots of people drink, and lots and lots of people smoke pot. At almost any given party, you can find some room where the door is closed, and four or five people are smoking up behind it, having a good old time. Other than pot and drinking, I don’t hear about too many other drugs being used. The majority of students at JMU are hardcore partiers, and the minority doesn’t drink at all. There isn’t really an in-between. |

A good number of people smoke weed, and there are all different types of people, too. If people are doing it at parties, they’re almost always very secretive about it and do it in a bedroom because it’s still not universally accepted. Heavier drugs aren’t really talked about, and I haven’t seen a lot of drug activity other than weed. |

There are drugs, but if you don’t want to see them or be around them, then you can make it so you’re not. |

I haven’t really seen or heard of a lot of hardcore drugs on campus. There is a relatively large amount of marijuana and drinking. |
