College Prowler Take

In the mid ’90s, JMU entered a landscaping contest where it placed high among other competitors like the White House and Disney World. It’s easy to see why. Elegant, gray stone buildings with white trim dot the main part of campus that is intersected by a railroad and christened with a lake and a fountain, and students at JMU take full advantage of their aesthetically-pleasing surroundings. On one of those same warm, summer days, the Quad will be plastered with readers, sleepers, and Frisbee players.

One glance at the athletic facilities, and you might be confused over whether UREC is indeed a gym or some sort of modern Mayan temple. A tour will prove to you that it is indeed a gym—and a mightily impressive one. With three levels to choose from, dozens of classes to take, multiple courts, indoor or outdoor tracks, a rock wall to climb, a pool, and a weight room, it isn’t hard to realize why some JMU students have a veritable love affair with their gym. Although most of the campus consists of the original buildings in their aged beauty, the newer part of campus is splendid, as well, equipped with state-of-the-art computer labs, air-conditioning, beautiful lighting, and expert interior and exterior design. Their only downside is their distance from the main campus.

The facilities are super nice! The recreational center is one of the best things about JMU. The campus also has a lot of areas where students can just chill out or do some homework. Taylor Down Under has to be my favorite spot because it’s colorful and comfortable. I go there to do everything from sleeping to eating to cramming for tests.

I really like the campus because it’s really pretty, and it has character. The Quad is the best when it’s hot outside because everyone comes out to be social. We also have a really great library, dining hall, gym, and all sorts of other cool places to go. TDU is really good for commuters and for anyone who needs a quick nap in between classes.

Facilities here are so cool! I go to the gym and lift weights almost every day, but sometimes, it gets a little too crowded. All the other buildings are pretty nice, too. They’re all old, so they kind of seem to fit with each other. And the Quad is so wonderful, if only just so we can see chicks sunbathing in bikinis in the spring. I love JMU.

Computer accessibility and networking is excellent. Food is incredible and easily accessible. Also, UREC is an amazing recreation facility which rivals even the big-business gyms.

The facilities are amazing, the gym (UREC) especially. It is three stories high and has just about everything you could ever want: swimming, racquetball, basketball courts, fitness classes, and a weight room. The only bad thing is that it can get really busy because everyone loves it. Elsewhere on campus, all the buildings have been kept up nicely. A lot of them are pretty old because the University is old, but they have character.

Favorite Things To Do

During the week, The Commons is a popular place for JMU’s clubs and organizations to promote themselves and their events, which often are charity related. They hand out pamphlets, pens, shirts, and so on, all giving information about service days on campus during the year, musical performances, or even awareness events. When students aren’t studying or getting involved in some of the many organizations, they can get a coffee at TDU while listening to local bands, live poetry, or improv groups. Over the weekend, students can attend sporting events, concerts, and even movies.

On a weekend, check out Grafton-Stovall Theatre to find out what’s on screen. Regardless, you can watch it for $2.50. Any day of the week, hit up the gym for some racquetball, swimming, weightlifting, running, or kickboxing. Grab a cup of joe at Java City in TDU (a hotspot for students), where you can also kick back and watch local poetry readings and bands or play pool. Students also dig the Airport Lounge on the fourth floor of Warren, take a nap, watch TV, get together and study, watch local bands, choirs, or dance performances, or listen to guest lectures or concerts at Wilson Auditorium or the Convocation Center. Catch a basketball game in the spring or a football game in the fall—just keep in mind that there is more to life than winning.
