College Prowler Take
For the guys at JMU, it takes a glance or two to find some eye candy; for the girls, it may take some serious elbow grease, but they do exist. Although JMU guys are harder to lump into one category, female students lament that all the hot ones are taken. However, not every fella is an absolute cad. At a party, a burly frat boy will slam into you and quickly ask with genuine concern if he spilled beer on you. Try to control your astonished gape, ladies, and accept the unfathomable truth that nice, attractive boys at JMU are not a figment of your imagination. Then tell the poor guy that, although he spilled three-fourths of his Natty Light on your leg, his authentic interest more than covers the party foul. If you’re a male reader, do re-read and take note of this frat boy’s admirable behavior. JMU ladies, on the other hand, seem to be largely blonde, tan, and beautiful. These female hordes can be intimidating at times, especially in the party scene. The imbalance of maleness on campus does account for a certain amount of cattiness and competition, both of which alcohol can augment. In addition, JMU girls are famous for looking positively bronze during months when the sun is not shining. However, there are thousands (literally) of down-to-earth, friendly JMU girls out there, as well. Students Speak Out

FactsBirth Control Available?
Yes - The Health Center provides contraceptives to women students through the Choices program. In addition, condoms are provided free of charge at the Health Center. Contraceptive prices through the Choices plan are as follows: 13 months of OCP birth control and annual exam for $120, annual exam $60, intital Depo Provera Rx injection included in exam and birth control for $120. Additional shots every 12 weeks cost $60 each. Three cycles of Ortho Evra are included in exam, and birth control is $120. Each additional three-month cycle is $60 each, and each addtional 13-pack of pills is $60.
Social Scene
Social is James Madison's middle name (the school, not the dead President). It's impossible not to find yourself at, or at least invited to, a party at JMU on a weekend or weeknight. Meeting and interacting with the opposite sex is never a problem, although the odds of dudes scoring hot girls are significantly larger than the odds of girls scoring hot dudes. On a Friday night, it's definitely easier to locate someone decked out and ready to rumble than someone who's chillin' in his or her pad. Although nearly extinct, rare species of non-partiers do exist, although their habitats have been greatly compromised by settlers of the rather intoxicated sort.
Hookups or Relationships?
The nature of JMU (overpopulation of gals, deficiency of guys) creates a scene that tends to embrace random hookups. Many of the folks who are couples have been couples for a long time, some still sticking it out in relationships that started in high school. Other people (many of the girls) are together with a fellow from a different school; Bridgewater, UVA, and Virginia Tech which are all relatively nearby, making long-distance relationships equally promising. On the whole, however, JMU is like any other school: if you want to hook up, you can make it happen; if not, you can cruise with your ladies or your boys, and window shop without smearing the glass, if you catch my drift.
Dress Code
Although JMU kids tend to dress a little on the preppy side— hair tied back with ribbons, decked out in khaki pants and polo shirts with the collars turned up—there is no real dress code on campus. Some students create their own fashion with a wardrobe from vintage and thrift stores, garage sales, and random sale racks. Others go for the baggy pants and skater shoes. Finally, some go for the casual, unshowered look, which is best completed with sweat pants and a T-shirt. The best-dressed award, however, definitely goes to our future CEOs and investment bankers from the CoB (College of Business). You can spot business majors a mile away with their pinstriped pantsuits, nylons, and flawlessly gelled, blowdried, and curled hair.
