Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In time, whether it’s a week or a year after your freshman term begins, you’ll begin to ponder what life is like off campus. Eventually, wearing flip-flops in the shower and walking across campus for breakfast will lose its luster. At that point, students should start perusing their off-campus options, such as a townhouse, apartment, or house. Once students have said “adios” to the on-campus experience, many miss the convenience of being able to roll out of bed and stumble to class without having to sell their souls for a parking spot.

Off-campus housing at James Madison is surprisingly abundant. Dozens of apartments in several complexes are less than a mile from campus. Houses that may accommodate up to ten people are available for rent throughout town. One big bummer is that some of the apartments are located on top of large hills, and the roads are impossible to drive when it’s snowing without four-wheel-drive. After taking into consideration everything from bathrooms to parking options, you may feel satisfied enough to pull roomies together and sign a lease. It’s definitely worth the cost, although off-campus living demands much extra planning. However, even after considering the cons, students agree that living off campus is a great alternative to the dorms.

Expensive

Apartments that are advertised for student living are pretty expensive. I suggest going to look for a place through a real estate agency in town for non-student living places and going in with 2 or 3 roommates.

Off Campus Housing

The off campus housing is affordable and it isn't hard to find a place, but a lot of the complexes are in poor condition. Parking at some complexes is difficult, but the buses run to campus about every half an hour. No one really worries about finding an apartment, the main issue is who you are going to live with.
