College Prowler Take
In time, whether it’s a week or a year after your freshman term begins, you’ll begin to ponder what life is like off campus. Eventually, wearing flip-flops in the shower and walking across campus for breakfast will lose its luster. At that point, students should start perusing their off-campus options, such as a townhouse, apartment, or house. Once students have said “adios” to the on-campus experience, many miss the convenience of being able to roll out of bed and stumble to class without having to sell their souls for a parking spot. Off-campus housing at James Madison is surprisingly abundant. Dozens of apartments in several complexes are less than a mile from campus. Houses that may accommodate up to ten people are available for rent throughout town. One big bummer is that some of the apartments are located on top of large hills, and the roads are impossible to drive when it’s snowing without four-wheel-drive. After taking into consideration everything from bathrooms to parking options, you may feel satisfied enough to pull roomies together and sign a lease. It’s definitely worth the cost, although off-campus living demands much extra planning. However, even after considering the cons, students agree that living off campus is a great alternative to the dorms.

Off-campus housing is pretty good....
Off-campus housing is pretty good. Thanks to the public buses, getting around without a car is pretty easy, and walking isn't too bad. Some of the apartments are a good distance from campus, though, making it a little difficult. The prices are going up a bit, making it a little expensive but not too terrible. Getting an apartment is something that has to start early because they go pretty quick!

For the most part, off-campus...
For the most part, off-campus housing seems convenient, except for the bus system, which is inconsistent in picking up passengers from local apartment complexes where many students live. |

There is plenty of off campus...
There is plenty of off campus housing within walking distance of campus. It is definitely worth it, but you need to find a place to live as early as possible. The good places go fast. On the plus side, housing is usually cheaper off campus than on.

I live in Sunchase now, and I...
I live in Sunchase now, and I really like it, even though it’s kind of expensive. It’s totally cool to be able to throw a decent party once in a while and have your own bathroom to use. I would definitely recommend staying on campus for at least one year, but then get off. You’ll never want to go back to the dorms after you move off campus. |

I love living off campus! There...
I love living off campus! There are lots of incidental expenses living off campus that you wouldn’t really realize unless you were in an apartment or house. For example: toilet paper, cleaning supplies, Internet connection fees, and electric bills. The only other bad thing about living in apartments is that sometimes your neighbors can be rather inconsiderate. Our neighbors above us play music really loud, and run around a lot late at night, so it’s hard to get to sleep. Other than stuff like that, off-campus living is the best! It’s so nice to have my own space and to be removed from campus a little bit. |
