College Prowler Take

Although a considerable amount of students, especially upperclassmen, utilize their own rigs for transportation, many others dig public transportation. The buses run every half-hour, give or take a few minutes, which is fairly convenient. Students agree that once you’ve mastered the schedule, taking the bus isn’t too much of a chore. The busiest times to ride seem to be mid- to late-afternoon and evening, when the entire non-morning crowd is finishing up classes and heading home. Most students agree that cramped conditions are still manageable in light of the fact that they won’t have to fight tooth and nail for a parking spot or spend time walking home.

While the most packed moments come later in the day, the most entertaining ones come late at night. The first night bus circles town around 7 p.m., and the last leaves at 3 a.m. The eight hours in between are a riot. The ‘Burg’s transit system becomes something of a drunk bus for party animals who are slightly tipsy to hopelessly inebriated and everywhere in between. Fortunately, the bus drivers are incredibly nice individuals, day or night. So, even in your woozy state, remember to say thank you upon exiting, even if it sounds more like “tango.”

The public transportation is good...

The public transportation is good at JMU. You can go from all the major apartment complexes to the school really easily. The buses are good late night Friday and Saturday, but they can take a long time to come and drive around if you need to go to other parts of town or for shopping. It's best to take the bus to class and to go to places at night on the weekend but best to take a car for shopping or moving around Harrisonburg.

Buses run all the time around campus and town. You can find a bus to about anywhere you want to go. They quit fairly early on weeknights, but on weekends there is the "Drunk Bus." There is also SafeRides, which will come pick you up really late at night if you're at a party or something and can't get home.

The buses are generally hit or miss. If you can catch them, you are set, but a lot of the time the busses are unreliable. They either come way early or way late. Either way, there is always a high chance that you will be waiting on one for much longer than you had anticipated.
