College Prowler Take

After a month or two in Harrisonburg, students have experienced a spectrum of weather, from the chilly to the muggy. Although Harrisonburg does receive all four seasons, students agree that the key to beating the random array of weather in the ‘Burg is variety. The Shenandoah Valley is one place where you can get away with having a drawer full of both sweaters and tank tops at any time of year. In addition, students advise you wear lots of layers. Also, the wind around town is nothing less than obnoxiously gusty, so bring a good windbreaker with a drawstring hood.

At JMU, the weather is extremely unreliable. To be prepared, pack like you’re going on vacation and you don’t know which country you’ll end up in. For those sporadic summery spells in the midst of winter, have a couple of tank tops or a pair of cargo shorts. For those artic blasts that may occur between spring rains and blooming flowers, keep a couple sweaters, a hat, and some gloves close by. Keep in mind that it’s not unlikely in Harrisonburg to see temperatures ranging from the 20s to the 70s in the same seven days. Another important note: if Weather.com predicts a 10 percent chance of rain or more, bring your umbrella. The percentage doesn’t mean anything; it just means rain.

Make sure you bring an umbrella!...

Make sure you bring an umbrella! It rains quite a bit here, especially in the springtime. And it’s not always warm rain, so make sure you have good shoes and a warm coat. Bring lots of tank tops and stuff, too, because it can get really warm. I guess the best I could say is just to have a lot of different clothes for any kind of weather.

The weather here is crazy! It’s winter one day, and summer a couple days later. You have to be prepared for it. I have learned to always keep a sweatshirt, a beanie, and an extra coat in the bottom drawer, because I usually have to pull them out.

You get all the seasons. It’s pretty cold in the winter, there’s plenty of snow, and it’s pretty warm in the summer. The wind is usually blowing, and there’s plenty of rain.

When it’s sunny here, Harrisonburg is the most amazing place to be. The sunshine brings out the best in the city. Sometimes, we get some interesting weather, too, like floods, hurricane warnings, big thunderstorms, and snow storms.

The weather’s unpredictable, but that’s the East Coast for you. The winters get really cold, and the summers are warm. There’s always those days in the middle that throw you off, like those 60 degree days in February and those chilly days in May. My advice? Wear layers.
