Best Things

  1. Research opportunities abound. If you want to do research as an undergraduate, Hopkins is a great choice.
  2. Despite being in the city, Hopkins is actually very beautiful and green. When on campus you never, ever feel like you’re in a city.
  3. Students organize symposia and lectures with world-class speakers. These speakers discuss topics from engineering to international relations to film.
  4. Baltimore City is a great mid-size city that offers many entertainment options. Washington, DC is an easy day trip away.
  5. You can walk anywhere on campus and to almost all off-campus housing within 15 minutes.
  6. Transportation around the city is quick, easy, and cheap. This allows students to explore the many benefits of Baltimore.
  7. Off-campus housing is affordable. Baltimore is a city with a low cost of living.
  8. Great location. It is within 10 minutes of two other large colleges (Towson and Loyola) and is similar distance away from the Inner Harbor. Students willing to explore the city will never get bored.
  9. Lack of a general core curriculum. Individual majors have requirements, but there are no courses that everyone takes.
  10. Johns Hopkins University has a great academic reputation. This reputation helps students network and find jobs right out of college.

JHU

The size of Hopkins is the happy medium between too big and too small. You're constantly meeting new people that you've never met before, but at the same time you always see people that you know while walking around campus. If you are interested in the medical field, Hopkins is the place to be. The science department is superb with amazing support and many hands on opportunities for research. Hopkins dishes out a rigorous workload, but at the same time there is ALWAYS help for you if/when you need it. The library is always full and there are rooms that offer daily tutoring. Professors are always willing to meet with students and will work with your schedule. There are always things to do during the weekend for students on campus, and there are also many things to do off campus. Inner Harbor is a very popular area that students commonly travel to. There is also free, easy transportation for college students that makes stops at other colleges, the mall, Inner Harbor, and a movie theater.

Free Reign

Since JHU is kind of a bubble, it's basically impossible to get in trouble. 'Hop Cops' on the street tell you where the parties are and never bust anyone. It's kind of a way to keep us at Hopkins parties instead of venturing into downtown baltimore. Drinking in the dorms is of course prohibited but everyone does it and getting 'written up' by an RA is less than a slap on the hand in my opinion.
