Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

On-campus housing is required for all freshmen and sophomores. AMR I and II offer the quintessential dorm experience—almost all of these rooms are yellow-walled, two-person squares. These are the most popular dorms because of the “freshman” feel to them. The dorms are very social, and people form close friendships. Freshmen often call it "incest" when you hook up with someone in your hall, since you’re going to run into them at breakfast, dinner, and on the way to the bathroom for the rest of the year. Buildings A and B are what most freshmen think they want  because they claim to have that same freshman feel except with air-conditioning and toilets in their suites. But, both of these buildings are tiny compared with the AMRs, which each have hundreds of students. Many of the students in Buildings A and B feel isolated from the bustle of the AMRs. For students who want a quieter freshman living experience, Buildings A and B and Wolman and McCoy are great options. Wolman and McCoy dorms are about five minutes from the freshman dorms, but the mix of freshmen and sophomores gives them a more mature feel. The arrangement is suites with a common room on each floor. A new state-of-the-art upperclassman dorm, Charles Commons, was recently constructed next to Wolman Hall. This dorm has apartment-style suites, each containing four single bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a common kitchen and living room. The dorm also has a library, an exercise room, and game rooms. Nolan’s Café, the new upperclassman dining hall, is also in Charles Commons.

On-campus housing isn’t spectacular, but it is acceptable. Charles Commons is the exception—these dorms are exceptional. Since Hopkins has a small campus, all of the exclusively freshman dorms are near one another, and the dorms housing older students are nearby. Common areas are cleaned frequently, but on the weekends, they dirty quickly. On-campus housing is expensive, and it requires the purchase of a meal plan. All on-campus housing is monitored by Hop Cops or security personnel and is located near classrooms, dining halls, and other campus buildings.

Wolman and Charles Commons

If you are lucky you will get to live in Wolman hall your freshman year and Charles Commons your sophomore year. The other dorms are alright but those two dorms definitely stand out from the rest.

Meh

The housing was alright, mostly because I was lucky to live in single rooms. There is not enough clothing storage space and the dorms are not kept very clean. The HVAC system was never clean.

Living at Hop

It's really hit or miss with Hopkins. Wolamn and McCoy Hall are some of the best dorms in the country for freshman, but the AMR's and Buildings A&B could be mistaken for section 8 housing. I would rank the sophomore dorms available rank amongst the best in the country so there's hope even if you get screwed as a freshman. The housing process is super easy.
