Freshmen Required to Live on Campus
Yes
College Prowler Take
On-campus housing is required for all freshmen and sophomores. AMR I and II offer the quintessential dorm experience—almost all of these rooms are yellow-walled, two-person squares. These are the most popular dorms because of the “freshman” feel to them. The dorms are very social, and people form close friendships. Freshmen often call it "incest" when you hook up with someone in your hall, since you’re going to run into them at breakfast, dinner, and on the way to the bathroom for the rest of the year. Buildings A and B are what most freshmen think they want because they claim to have that same freshman feel except with air-conditioning and toilets in their suites. But, both of these buildings are tiny compared with the AMRs, which each have hundreds of students. Many of the students in Buildings A and B feel isolated from the bustle of the AMRs. For students who want a quieter freshman living experience, Buildings A and B and Wolman and McCoy are great options. Wolman and McCoy dorms are about five minutes from the freshman dorms, but the mix of freshmen and sophomores gives them a more mature feel. The arrangement is suites with a common room on each floor. A new state-of-the-art upperclassman dorm, Charles Commons, was recently constructed next to Wolman Hall. This dorm has apartment-style suites, each containing four single bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a common kitchen and living room. The dorm also has a library, an exercise room, and game rooms. Nolan’s Café, the new upperclassman dining hall, is also in Charles Commons. On-campus housing isn’t spectacular, but it is acceptable. Charles Commons is the exception—these dorms are exceptional. Since Hopkins has a small campus, all of the exclusively freshman dorms are near one another, and the dorms housing older students are nearby. Common areas are cleaned frequently, but on the weekends, they dirty quickly. On-campus housing is expensive, and it requires the purchase of a meal plan. All on-campus housing is monitored by Hop Cops or security personnel and is located near classrooms, dining halls, and other campus buildings.

The AMRs are the worst dorms. They are the oldest and therefore don't have air-conditioning, and they have public restrooms rather than bathrooms in each suite. Buildings A and B have a comprehensive amount of amenities, and Wolman is stellar in terms of rooms and amenities.

The dorms aren't bad at all. Wolman is the nicest, AMR is traditional college housing, and Buildings A and B are cool, but they're far from most important sites.

AMR I and II are similar and not as nice as Wolman. Wolman dorms cost more but are worth it. Buildings A and B are nice, as well. The options are much better for upperclassmen, unless you get stuck in McCoy.

For freshman, Wolman is the best dorm, by far. The rooms come with their own kitchenette and bathroom. Upperclassmen can choose between higher-class dorms and apartments.

Freshman dorms are pretty nice. Wolman and McCoy are nicer but do not provide the college dorm atmosphere that I think every freshman should experience.
