College Prowler Take
The computer network is fast and reliable. Most students bring their own computers and don’t rely on the computer labs, but many will freely recommend bringing your own computer primarily due to convenience. Many students like the freedom to work in places other than a computer lab. Instant Messenger is one of the main ways that students communicate with one another, and illegal file-sharing is rampant, even though the Hopkins administration has been increasing security within the Hopkins network to discourage this behavior. There is only one 24-hour computer lab, but both PCs and Macs are almost always available. The other labs are open only at certain times throughout the day, and in these labs, no one is available to help if you have problems. Printing is cheap but unreliable. If you don’t bring a computer, you won’t have any problem getting work done, but you may feel left out since you will be in the minority. The computer network is entirely adequate for a school of Hopkins’s size. The Ethernet connection is fast and doesn’t slow down when many students are online. The main computer lab is open all the time and is centrally located in the middle of campus. It is uncommon to have to wait for a computer, and computer science students are employed in the lab to ensure that the computers work properly. Except for losing information due to file corruption because of the high use of the computers, students have no complaints about computers or the network.

Students should bring their own computers. The network often gets busy at the library, and it is impossible to get Internet access for hours. The computer labs are usually empty, and their computers work well.
