Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Hopkins has renovated and is continuing to renovate many facilities on campus due to students’ complaints. The campus itself is beautiful—several years ago, an anonymous donor gave money to replace all asphalt pathways with brick, and the quads are landscaped well and surrounded by flowers and trees. After driving through Baltimore to get to Hopkins, walking around the beautiful campus is a very pleasant surprise. While on campus, you barely feel like you are in the city. E-Level, located in Levering Hall, is a great place to hang out, with its free televisions, video games, and pool tables, but many students still wish it were an on-campus bar. The Mattin Center, Levering Student Union, and the Recreation Center were all built or remodeled in the past few years, and students are happy with these facilities. The main complaint is that although these buildings contain more space for student recreation, music practice, and theater, they are still crowded. On the other hand, these three buildings are state-of-the-art compared to other facilities.

Students have responded well to the renovations that the administration has made. There are plenty of places for student groups to meet, and the campus is well maintained. The Recreation Center and the Mattin Center are grade-A buildings. These facilities only lose points because they are not big enough for the interest they have generated. Levering Hall has E-Level, a cafeteria, and large meeting rooms for student fashion shows, dances, and lectures. The athletic facilities are state-of-the-art because of the Division I lacrosse team.

Library

The library is really nice. It's easy to find books and the staff is helpful. The library gets crowed at times but the university just built an extension to the library so there will more room to study in the fall of 2012

Classic and Refined

The facilities at Hopkins are all either very modern or in the process of being updated, but the overall aesthetic of the campus follows a beautiful classic theme based on the architecture of an old house that has been on the property since before it became a college campus. The study areas are numerous, and one of my favorite things to do on campus is to constantly hunt for and sample new study atmospheres. All of the necessities for success are easily accessed and other students are always willing to provide tips and advice to their lesser-experience peers when it comes to using the facilities to their fullest.

Beautiful Campus

After all of the construction finishes this campus will become even more beautiful than it already is. The Rec center is really clean and new and all of the building are beautiful. The new Brody Learning Commons are going to be amazing!

Favorite Things To Do

Students can work out at the newly renovated Recreation Center, grab a bite to eat at Levering Hall, Charles Street Market, or Silk Road, attend a play or concert performed by other students, watch an exciting Division I lacrosse game, or hang out on the “beach.”

There are several theater groups, many a cappella groups, an improv comedy group, several bands, and a symphony. Because there are so many student arts groups, there are performances almost every weekend. The Recreation Center’s basketball courts and climbing wall are popular places for students to meet. E-Level provides free televisions, video games, and pool tables. When the weather is warm enough, students gather in the quads and on “the beach” enjoying the sun. Many students, however, choose to spend time in the library instead of hanging out at other places on campus. For between classes, Pura Vida’s comfy sofas, wireless Internet connections, full range of delicious and aromatic coffees, sandwiches, and light snacks makes it the perfect spot to hang out with friends and relax.

Did You Know?

The MSE Library appears to only be two floors, but it is actually six—it goes down into the ground four stories! Tradition states that no building can be taller than Gilman Hall, named after the University’s first president Daniel Gilman, so by building down instead of up, JHU has preserved this tradition.
