Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

People get accepted into Hopkins because of their intelligence, not because of their attractiveness. That isn’t to say that there aren’t attractive people at Hopkins. The biggest difference is that students at Hopkins pay less attention to their appearance than students at other schools. There’s no one type of person that dominates Hopkins: There are preppy people, jocks, and foreign students. Girls like the near 1-to-1 ratio of guys to girls, and it isn’t hard to meet people of the opposite sex since almost all dorms are coed. In the AMRs, there is a decent number of hookups, but many of them aren’t too serious. By sophomore year, there are less hookups and more relationships, which tend to be based on common interests, not looks. Even so, many students go through Hopkins without having a boyfriend or girlfriend. If you are upset by the selections at Johns Hopkins, you can easily travel to several other area colleges to meet more people.

On the whole, Hopkins is a pretty average campus when it comes to looks. There aren’t many, if any, models running around, and there’s a running joke on campus about the pick-up line for attractive people being, “You must go to Towson/Loyola.” The population is diverse, so there’s no traditional look. Most of the students are pretty down-to-earth and studious. Even if you don’t end up dating anyone, you will, at the very least, make friends with members of the opposite sex.

Hm...

Girls are not that great. Most are way too involved in their studies and don't know how to have fun. That is why I am dating a girl from the art school 10 minutes away (MICA).

Looks

Guys and girls are generally okay looking. Athletes are always fun to hang out with and are more or less the better looking people on campus. Everyone is very fun though, and likes to socialize

Facts

Social Scene

Generally, Johns Hopkins is unfairly judged. JHU is a school with many serious students, but Baltimore is a city with a lot of fun clubs and bars, which creates a "work hard, play hard" environment. There really isn’t any social scene Sunday through Wednesday, but Thursday through Saturday is a blast. During freshman year, there’s a lot of interaction between the sexes because all freshman housing is coed. Greek life isn’t dominant, but the fraternities are right off campus and throw fun parties. The city is definitely a blast once you are 21, but there are clubs that are 18-and-up to get into, as well. If you are willing to take a 10-minute cab ride, you can even reap the benefits of hanging out with cute members of the opposite sex at both Loyola and Towson. Overall, Johns Hopkins has a great social scene, as long as you don’t trap yourself in the library.

Hookups or Relationships?

Hookups are most common freshman year, especially in the AMRs. When students want to hook up with someone they don't know as well, they often go to frat parties. Many students enter Hopkins with boyfriends or girlfriends at other schools, and prefer these relationships because they take up less time. Time is the major barrier that prevents more students from wanting relationships. Relationships do occur, however, usually arising from friendships in dorms, classes, or extracurricular activities.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

If you are outgoing and thrive well in a social environment, the best place to meet members of the opposite sex is at fraternity parties or local bars/clubs. If you are not extremely outgoing, don’t worry, there are a lot of other JHU students just like you! Because students are so busy with schoolwork, another great place to meet members of the opposite sex is in the freshman cafeteria or in student clubs. When you meet someone in a class or at an extracurricular activity, you have a common interest that can help you get to know each other better. So, join a lot of student groups, keep your eyes open in the cafeteria, and get ready to party on the weekends!

Dress Code

The daily dress code is very casual. Both guys and girls wear jeans and khakis to class and around campus. Guys generally wear T-shirts or button-down shirts, and girls usually wear T-shirts, sweaters, or tank tops. Because many students have professional internships, it is also not uncommon to see sport coats or skirts around campus, especially on Thursdays and Fridays, when many students don't have classes. When going to bars or parties, girls usually dress up more than guys, wearing high heels, skirts or nice pants, and cute shirts.
