Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Johns Hopkins’ students have many options when it comes to nightlife, some just don’t take advantage of them. The students who complain about the social scene at JHU need to open their eyes. There are three bars within walking distance of campus—two sports bars and a dance club. If you enjoy dancing, then the Den is the place for you. Students from Towson and Loyola frequently take cabs to party at the Hopkins’ bars. Student organizations have added to the nightlife scene by realizing the need for school-sponsored club nights, and while groups used to organize these nights once a semester, they now offer them two to three times a month. For a small charge, students get transportation, club entry, and sometimes even drinks. Some of these nights are open only to Hopkins students, while others give students a chance to meet individuals from other schools. If students are willing to look around Baltimore, they will likely find a club that matches their interests. In addition, many students go to house parties with their friends. There are three main fraternities on campus that throw parties once in a while, but they are usually crowded. It is fun to check these parties out and then head to the bars.

Johns Hopkins’ students work hard throughout the week, but the campus comes to life on Friday and Saturday. The three bars near campus (PJ’s, Charles Village Pub, and The Den) are relatively small, so that is the main downside, but outgoing students venture outside the confines of these bars. Going to Towson or Loyola bars is usually a blast because this gives you a chance to meet new people. If you are not a fan of going to the bars, there are other fun activities on campus, such as student plays, concerts, and movies. Some students are ambitious enough to travel to the Inner Harbor or Fell’s Point area, both of which are known for their nightlife. These areas provide a much different social scene and it is only about a 10 dollar cab ride. For the few individuals who are unsatisfied with the nightlife in Baltimore, DC is only a short train or car ride away.

Frats or Downtown

The frat life at Hopkins isn't that great, but there's always a party somewhere if you know the right people. For those that aren't happy with the (dude-heavy) frat parties, however, the clubs in Baltimore are great if you're willing to drop the money. There are a LOT of formals, so if you're involved in Greek life or happen to be in with a lot of the brothers or sisters, you can get used to the idea of open bars.

Fun If You're Looking for It

No one's going to hold your hand and show you where the parties are, but if you're looking for fun there are bars around campus and usually good parties. There's a big culture of studying or staying in, but there's definitely your group of people who go out every night and know where to party

Whatever You Are Into

The nightlife is great. If you are into frat parties with beer pong , drinking and rave-like dancefloors, frats are welcoming to all people (even people not affiliated with Greek life). If you prefer relaxing in your dorm jamming out to music, there are plenty of people who do that. If you like movies, the Hop organizes a movie showing every weekend. Whatever you like, there is something for you.

Organization Parties

Many student organizations throw house parties. These parties are sponsored by individual upperclassmen members. These house parties offer an opportunity for students to get to know each other in a more social setting. Parties vary in size from a few students to approximately a hundred students.

Did You Know?

On Halloween, Fells Point hosts one of the largest parties in America. Fells Point is a strip of more than 10 bars, and on Halloween, the streets are blocked off so everyone can walk around with their costumes on. Thousands of people show up, including college students and members of the local community. It is a party you don’t want to miss.

There are three bars within walking distance of Johns Hopkins’ campus. PJ’s and Charles Village Pub are fun sports bars with great food, and the Den is a fast-paced club with tons of dancing.

The Den

The Den is a fun club, and it's only minutes from campus. It is a bit pricey, but the club plays fun music, and everyone is always dancing. Loyola guys and girls love to party here, so it is a great place to find a random hookup. If you are feeling like a party animal and/or you don’t have classes until late Monday morning, the Den offers an all-you-can-drink special on Sunday nights. This is a great bargain and is always a bunch of fun.

Have a Nice Day Café

Have a Nice Day Café is at Power Plant Live! It is a tribute to different decades and is decorated with smiley faces and tie-dye. It’s not as crowded as BAR Baltimore generally, and has a definite retro charm. The dancing area has lighting in the floor and the feel of a disco club, but the music is contemporary. Thursday night is 18 and over.

Bourbon Street

This three-story club provides a night of fun for anyone 18+. Bourbon Street is a Mardi Gras-themed bar and concert venue. It has become one of the most popular night clubs in all of Baltimore and is always a blast. On Thursday nights the club runs an all-you-can-drink special! This is the perfect place to meet new people and have a great time. Check out the Web site to see how cool this new club really is.

Baja Beach Club

Baja Beach Club has a full-blown beach theme both in terms of atmosphere and decor. Come early if you want a seat near the dance floor—this place is always crowded. Keep an eye out for hot waitresses in bikinis.

Howl at the Moon

Howl at the Moon is a bar with a unique theme. They have dueling pianos set up center stage, between the tables and the bar. A dance floor covers the space between the entrance and pianos. Early on, they can play some annoying stuff, but as the night progresses, they get a full band going and play some good stuff. They are also more than willing to take requests if the price is right.

PJ’s Pub

A hole in the wall sort of place located right next to Wolman Hall, across the street from campus. Students who don’t like Charles Village Pub often go to PJ’s. Many students also order PJ’s pizza. It’s not great, but it’s cheap, and since it’s right next door, it’s easy to do pickup and not have to tip for delivery. The TVs generally have sporting events on.

Baltimore

(410) 243-8844

Spy Club

Spy Club is an upscale club located on the second and third floors of the Midtown Yacht Club. Serves dishes such as smoked salmon and paté for the more refined taste. They have an oxygen bar and admission is five dollars after 9:30 p.m. Sunday and Thursday nights are Britpop nights and they offer great tapas.

Baltimore

Greene Turtle

The Greene Turtle is a bar and eatery with multiple televisions and a pub-type atmosphere. The food is actually one of the focuses, and it’s better than you’d normally expect from a bar. This is the type of place that kind of has two sections—one for diners and one for bar patrons. It’s not a place where you generally see a whole lot of Hopkins students.

The Brewer’s Art

The Brewer’s Art is located in a large, Mt. Vernon townhouse where they brew their own beer and provide a variety of very good, but highly-priced, dishes. The entire first floor is occupied by the upscale restaurant. Downstairs is the somewhat sketchier bar area, at least compared to the nice restaurant upstairs. Their home-made beers are pretty good.

Charles Village Pub

One of the most popular hangouts at Hopkins. It’s one block from campus, has reasonable prices, and generally is showing a sports game or two on TV. The food is greasy, and exactly what someone would expect from a bar, especially one right next to a college campus. Many students go here for the appetizers as well as the drinks. The drinks are two for one during happy hour, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

3107 St. Paul St.

Baltimore

(410) 243-1611

Craig's

Craig’s is a Loyola bar, but it is less than 10 minutes from Johns Hopkins. It is much larger than the local bars and has great specials on Thursday nights. The overall scene is similar to PJ’s or Charles Village Pub, but it is a great change up if you are looking to meet different people or just get away from JHU for a night.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Thursday nights are 18 and over at most clubs. Student groups offer organized trips to Baltimore clubs many Thursdays. Many bars, including PJ’s and CVP, allow entry under 21 all the time. No one cards at frat parties or house parties. E-Level, in Levering Hall, has satellite television, video games, and a pool table.
