College Prowler Take
Students who love Hopkins and students who hate it both recognize that JHU isn’t the school for everyone. Many students believe that classes at JHU are just as hard as Ivy League schools, but they complain that Hopkins’ professors grade much harder. Many students wish that Hopkins offered grade inflation, as other top schools do, since even people who work hard sometimes end up with low grades. This influences some students to put studying above any social activity in hopes of being one of few people in a class who receives an “A.” Hopkins offers a variety of social programming, but no one forces students to participate, and there’s no one holding your hand and leading you to fun activities. Even though students complain, most say that they’ve enjoyed being challenged by their experiences at Hopkins. Hopkins presents a well-rounded experience for most students, but not every student takes advantage of the academic, social, and extracurricular opportunities. Some students wish that Hopkins encouraged students to get involved in all aspects of University life, but once you realize that it doesn’t, you can make your own choices about how you want to spend your time. The school’s academic reputation and its state-of-the-art facilities are strong points at Hopkins. Campus housing and food have been improved considerably in the past two years with the construction of a new cafeteria and a new upperclassmen dorm.

I’m pretty happy with the Hopkins scene. It’s definitely not for everyone, but everyone makes what they want out of their college experience. I joined an a capella group, and several other rewarding clubs. I think Hopkins was probably the best choice for me. |

Hopkins provides incredible opportunities to undergraduates that aren’t possible at other institutions, especially in research. Socially, it’s what you make of it. There’s a lot going on, but it’s not force-fed to you the way it is at some other schools. |

I really like Hopkins. For me, it’s a good balance of liberal and conservative views. I think that I’m getting a great education and that students are really working to make the overall social experience better. I still kind of wish that more students at Hopkins got excited about the school. I think that they don’t appreciate the opportunities here. I sometimes feel that way about the professors, also. |

I appreciated the challenge. I enjoyed the fact that I actually had to work to succeed here. This is a great place for some people, but it’s not for everyone. I would definitely come back here. |

At Hopkins, we study hard and play hard! There is a ton of stuff to do in Baltimore. I think that it is a difficult school, but I am having a wonderful time, and I think that I am doing really well. The people are awesome—most of the kids are middle class and aren’t showy or pretentious—one reason why I chose JHU over Yale or Harvard. I can’t picture myself anywhere else. |
