Best Things

  • Baltimore is a great mid-size city that offers many entertainment options. Washington, D.C., is an easy day trip away.
  • Despite being in the city, Hopkins is actually very beautiful and green. When on campus, you never ever feel like you’re in a city.
  • Johns Hopkins University has a great academic reputation. This reputation helps students network and find jobs right out of college.
  • Lack of a general core curriculum. Individual majors have requirements, but there are no courses that everyone takes.

Worst Things

  • The competitive nature of the students. The school is so competitive that a large number of students rarely take a break from studying. As the school year drags on, you begin to see the same people in the library.
  • Hopkins lacks traditional school spirit. Students are proud of the Hopkins name and reputation, but not its athletics.
  • Many students feel that professors are more concerned with their own research than with helping the students they teach.
  • The on-campus meal plan leaves a lot to be desired. Although there’s a wide selection of food offered, students dislike the meal plan requirement for freshmen and sophomores. It is expensive, and the dining halls repeat food choices often.

Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Students who love Hopkins and students who hate it both recognize that JHU isn’t the school for everyone. Many students believe that classes at JHU are just as hard as Ivy League schools, but they complain that Hopkins professors grade much harder. Many students wish that Hopkins offered grade inflation, as other top schools do, since even people who work hard sometimes end up with low grades. This influences some students to put studying above any social activity, in the hopes of being one of the few people in a class to receive an “A.” Hopkins offers a variety of social programming, but no one forces students to participate, and there’s no one holding your hand and leading you to fun activities. Even though students complain, most say that they’ve enjoyed being challenged by their experiences at Hopkins.

Hopkins presents a well-rounded experience for most students, but not every student takes advantage of the academic, social, and extracurricular opportunities. Some students wish that Hopkins encouraged students to get involved in all aspects of University life, but once you realize that it doesn’t, you can make your own choices about how you want to spend your time. The school’s academic reputation and its state-of-the-art facilities are strong points at Hopkins. Campus housing and food have been improved considerably in recent years with new constructions popping up.

Unique

People are from all around the world. It is so fun and interesting to hear where they are from and how they live without just reading it from a text book and not knowing how true it is. The professors, for the most part, genuinely care about you and help you if you talk to them about your grade or anything else. This school is also big on helping you get internships and jobs on and off campus. Everyone here really does try to help you so long as you ask for it.

It's a Roller Coaster Ride

Like any top tier school, JHU is very academically rigorous, sometimes to the point where I feel that people put their grades before anything else. That being said, there are so many different types of people here that you are bound to find a niche that shares your same values and priorities, so while it may be hard at times, you're friends are always a great support system. There's a fair amount of flexibility in what you can pursue at Hopkins, so it's easy to explore all sorts of options both academically and extra-curricularly.

And you thought you were smart...

First, the admission percentage for the incoming class at JHU is 18%. I don't know where the 28% came from -- must have been 4 or 5 years ago.

JHU is not the school for everyone but the opportunities here are endless. Research positions are easy to find. Professors are accessible. Social opportunities are ample. The trick is to really have the mindset that to do well and enjoy your time here (which for the most part, go hand in hand), you should be studying when you have the chance. When you stay on top of your studies, you can enjoy visiting speakers, a night out at PJs or a fraternity party, or whatever else there is to do at jhu. If you plan (study) ahead of time, you'll do well and have fun when the best opportunities are there. If you squander your time, you will do poorly initially. Then you'll learn the hard way- but you'll get it in time. Stay motivated. Stay on top of work. College life is better that way at hopkins. The cram sesh all nighter might work at other universities, but not here. Best of luck!
