Lengthy and Unrewarding Process

This school expects everyone to have the ridiculous amount of money it takes to come here. Unfortunately, not everyone does. Depending on the cost of your on campus housing and meal plan, the cost of attendance can easily reach 55-60k and they don't give you many options for handling the cost. The advisors are rude and unhelpful. Despite 2 retired parents and a second mortgage on our house, the school will be offering me $0 in financial aid next year. They require so much paperwork and proof just to determine that you will be getting no money. This school is cheap and unwilling to work with students in financial hardships.

Wait, We Have to Fund Students?

Hopkins is well-known for its alumni. The reason for this is because most of the money goes to the funding of the research faculty. This leaves a little bit of money to support campus internet (which isn't terrible, but it's not fast a la Princeton) and an even smaller chunk of money to support students. There isn't really any way that you can try to get financial aid from Hopkins--unless you're on the Hodson scholarship and/or you're an extremely outstanding disabled student from an extremely poor country who was raised by one parent.

Advice on Financial Aid

Fill out as many scholarship, fellowship, and grant applications as possible. Fill out all of the financial calculator methodologies. Hopkins is a very expensive school; do whatever you can to help yourself minimize debt and stress. There is plenty of aid available, and most students receive some financial aid package. Alumni often sponsor portions of a student's tuition, as well.
