College Prowler Take
Many students do not find a need to use Baltimore City public transportation. Instead, they use the free shuttle service, called the Collegetown Shuttle, which can get them to the Harbor, the Hopkins Medical School, Peabody Conservatory of Music, Towson, the mall, other area universities, and anywhere else within a mile of campus. When students want to go to DC, they take the Collegetown Shuttle to Penn Station and then take the Amtrak or MARC trains. Students who do use the city’s public transportation describe it as reliable and cheap. Baltimore public transportation isn’t great, but it will suffice. The main complaint about it is that it takes many connections to reach certain points in the city. There are also entire sections of the city and suburbs that are not accessible by public transportation. Some students feel unsafe on the buses because of the mix of individuals who use them for travel. Since many students do not have cars, they use mostly shuttle services and taxis to get around Baltimore. Students don’t generally cite lack of public transportation as a reason that they don’t leave the Homewood campus.

Public transportation is very convenient. There are taxis everywhere, and the school has a bus that runs every 30 minutes to get to Inner Harbor and different shopping malls in the area.

I don’t take buses, or anything like that. If you need to get out, you can usually walk, take a shuttle, or call a taxi. There’s really no need for buses. Everything you’d need is right here. |

Public transportation is easy to use. There are always cabs nearby, and the buses are cheap and can get you pretty far. There are shuttles that go to the train station, and from there you can take the train to DC on a weekday for $5.75 if you use the MARC train. There are also free shuttles to the Peabody Music Conservatory, Hopkins Medical School, and one of the malls in the area. |

If you want to take Amtrak or the MARC, there is a free shuttle from Hopkins that takes you to the station pretty easily. I’ve taken it a few times. You can also take a five dollar taxi there. Taxis are pretty easy to catch near campus, so that’s not a problem. There is also a free shuttle to the mall. The campus security van will take you within a mile for free—I take that all the time. |

Cabs are everywhere, but the bus system is kind of sketchy. Just like any big city, you’ll find all kinds of people on the buses. Imagine NY buses, but less numbers of people on each bus. |
