Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students agree that the professors play a huge role in furthering the spirit and feeling of community that Juniata prides itself on. In exchange for such high accessibility and support, professors have equally high expectations. While classes vary in size and difficulty, most tend to be small and challenging, and students respond by working hard to fulfill the goals the faculty sets for them, and that they set for themselves. There are many benefits to this high level of interaction—the most prominent being that it takes individualizing a program of emphasis (POE to Juniatians, a “major” to everyone else) to a whole new level. Students can receive a well-rounded education in pretty much whatever they can imagine, as long as they can justify it to the Registrar. Fifty-two percent of students take advantage of this opportunity.

As for program notoriety, at Juniata, the sciences rule the roost. The lab and research possibilities for undergrads are exceptionally top-notch, especially for such a small school. For those who instead decide to wander over to the dark side—humanities—they’ll find a group of equally dedicated, passionate faculty and intelligent, insightful students to keep them company, even if Good Hall’s leaky roof sometimes compares weakly to the splendor of the new Von Liebig Center for Science.

Quality education

Juniata is mainly known as that science school. Even though science is greatly emphasized here, I believe that the rest of our majors are given just as much attention as well. The classes are small so I can receive individual help if I do not understand what is going on in class. Professors have set office hours, but most of the time, my professors have told me I could drop by any time i wanted to if I needed help.

When I was a freshmen, I was shocked at the amount of in class participation I had to do. In high school, my grades was never dependent on class participation. Now however, 20% of my grade in nearly all my classes depend on my participation. I absolutely hated this at first. But now that I am a sophomore this year, I realized I really enjoy the participation in class. Participating helps my better understand the topics and develop new ideas on what we're talking about. For the people that are scared to participate, don't worry-the students and professors are almost 100% very welcoming of your opinions and views.

I am an IT major and I love my department. I teach the required freshmen course IA. I really like being bale to take what I learn from class and actually apply it to students I teach if I find the opportunity.

Additionally, a lot of professors live a minute off campus. The head of the IT department and IA is Dr. Rhodes. Before my IA job started, he had all the employees over for a barbeque followed by an orientation for the job. How many professors at other schools would invite you over for a barbeque?

Overall, there is so much to talk about academically at Juniata. Every aspect is amazing in its own way!

Really Really Flexible

Juniata is extremely flexible with majors. You can combine to create a major or graduate in one major with other classes sprinkled in as well.

Biochem Major!

I'm not going to lie, jumping into the sciences at a pretty much science school is a little shocking at first. Ochem and Bio at the same time are HARD, but eventually you get into a groove and you can learn to handle it. Although you may not have much free time, the friends that you do make that have classes with you are amazing, and those friendships will last forever. Struggle through ochem together, and you'll always be together!

Did You Know?

Instead of a major, Juniata has a Program of Emphasis (POE). Students work with two advisors to develop their academic path over the four years in which they work to receive their degree. The POE allows for greater program flexibility, and 52 percent of students go a step further and develop an individual POE that utilizes an interdisciplinary course load. Students can combine any number of interests to help them fulfill their ultimate goals.

The class of 2005 spawned three Fulbright scholars; two are now continuing their studies in Germany, while the other is in Peru.

In the past four years, graduate schools accepted 95 percent of Juniata applicants to medical, podiatry, dental, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, veterinary and chiropractic programs.

Juniata had two of its faculty win the Pennsylvania Professor of the Year Award in the past four years: Professor of Theater Andrew Belser and Professor of History David Hsiung.
