Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students agree that the professors play a huge role in furthering the spirit and feeling of community that Juniata prides itself on. In exchange for such high accessibility and support, professors have equally high expectations. While classes vary in size and difficulty, most tend to be small and challenging, and students respond by working hard to fulfill the goals the faculty sets for them, and that they set for themselves. There are many benefits to this high level of interaction—the most prominent being that it takes individualizing a program of emphasis (POE to Juniatians, a “major” to everyone else) to a whole new level. Students can receive a well-rounded education in pretty much whatever they can imagine, as long as they can justify it to the Registrar. Fifty-two percent of students take advantage of this opportunity.

As for program notoriety, at Juniata, the sciences rule the roost. The lab and research possibilities for undergrads are exceptionally top-notch, especially for such a small school. For those who instead decide to wander over to the dark side—humanities—they’ll find a group of equally dedicated, passionate faculty and intelligent, insightful students to keep them company, even if Good Hall’s leaky roof sometimes compares weakly to the splendor of the new Von Liebig Center for Science.

Great Academics

Juniata has amazing academics. My program includes many great professors and internship opportunities. About 80% of students at Juniata do an internship at some point in their four years. The workload is a bit heavy but I feel that I truly understand the material and the intensive work will prepare me for law school. We also have a very good career services office that helps students find jobs after Juniata.

Great Professors Equals Great Academics

Juniata has amazing professors who are extremely helpful. They are always available and willing to set up meeting times. There is no excuse not to learn the material at Juniata. Everyone there wants you to succeed and will do anything to make that happen. The workload is tough but it will prepare me for law school. Our medical program is very prestigious and boasts a near perfect acceptance rate to grad school. Juniata also has a perfect acceptance rate to law school! The class sizes are small (20 on average) and interactive which makes learning easy. Overall, I love Juniata and its small town atmosphere. The community is great and there are plenty of things to do. This paired with great academics makes Juniata the school for me.

Can't Get It Anywhere Else

The Environmental Science program here is outstanding! Professors work with you to find classes that fit your interests but also get you graduating on time. The experience you get through classes and labs and mainly the Field Station is something no other school can come close to. The program really focuses in on teaching you the skills and knowledge base to do a job in the environmental field and do it well. The professors also help you out with finding internships, many of which provide excellent opportunities that can turn into real careers. Overall an amazing program that if I could, would take again and again.

Did You Know?
  • Instead of a major, Juniata has a Program of Emphasis (POE). Students work with two advisers to develop their academic path over the four years in which they work to receive their degree. The POE allows for greater program flexibility, and 52 percent of students go a step further and develop an individual POE that utilizes an interdisciplinary course load. Students can combine any number of interests to help them fulfill their ultimate goals.
  • The class of 2005 spawned three Fulbright scholars; two are now continuing their studies in Germany, while the other is in Peru.
  • In the past four years, graduate schools accepted 95 percent of Juniata applicants to medical, podiatry, dental, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, veterinary and chiropractic programs.
  • Juniata had two of its faculty win the Pennsylvania Professor of the Year Award in the past four years: Professor of Theater Andrew Belser and Professor of History David Hsiung.
