Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletic teams at Juniata are supported with general goodwill—if not always attendance—from most of the students. Many teams have small but loyal followings. A good portion of Juniata students are athletic, whether they’re on a varsity or IM team or just head to the gym to work out. While many of the teams have their steadfast fans, none of the sports evoke a particularly communal diehard atmosphere, except perhaps the celebrated volleyball teams. Their pedestals are deserved—the women’s team always impresses; they’ve gone to the national semifinals for 19 out of 21 years. They finally proudly took home the national championship in 2004, the same year their coach, Larry Bock, tallied his 1,000th win. This followed the men’s team’s own championship the year before.

When it comes to IM, rugby and ultimate Frisbee are more serious about their game, and some students enjoy IM basketball and volleyball, which are more relaxed than their varsity counterparts. Varsity teams do tend to bond together; many get houses or apartments, and actually, the athletic teams are probably the closest thing Juniata has to Greek life. This causes some students to complain that the teams are cliquey. Athletics tend to be met with the same general, amiable, and occasionally impassioned support as everything else at Juniata, whether someone’s playing basketball for fun or a talented team is strutting its stuff on the court.

D-3

Sports are not much of a big thing here. They are all D-3 division. The football time is deplorable. The only sports team that is even a little relavent here is the women's volleyball team.

The Eagles

The sports teams at Juniata vary in performance. The poor football team only won one game this season but Men's Volleyball went to championships. The coaches are very involved and friendly. Most of the students are regulars at some type of sporting event and the gym is fantastic, it has private courts, a few gymnasiums, a weight room, a pool, and so much more.

Not a Big Deal

Students at Juniata are generally supportive of the college's sports teams, but sports does not seem to be a main focus at the school. Juniata is known for its great volleyball team, but it is less successful in football.

Most Popular Sports

Volleyball, volleyball, volleyball. Both the men’s and women’s teams have been recent national champions, and women’s volleyball coach Larry Bock celebrated his 1,000th win. It’s the sport at Juniata. However, basketball also has a good following, as does football, despite its underdog status. Rugby always has a presence on campus, as a result of both their dedicated players and their parties.

Most Overlooked Teams

The intramural teams often complain about finding a place and time to practice, as their schedules often conflict with those of the varsity teams

School Spirit

Juniata students tend to be generally supportive and enthusiastic, but rarely are they rabid. It’s true that some could care less about being very peppy, and many older students worry that some of the College’s beloved traditions may be dying away before their eyes, all from a lack of caring. At the same time, if a team like oh, say, women’s volleyball, is on the verge of making history, you’ll find nary a student that will turn a cold shoulder to their success—on the contrary, students will pack the gym to honor their achievements and give them support. Most students are proud of Juniata, whether it’s because of its academics or just the friendships, independence, and good vibes they’ve found from nearly everyone there. A physical testament to the comfortable communal spirit on campus—you can see Juniata attire everywhere, especially sweatshirts, the casual style of choice for many.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are beyond easy to get. For many events, they’re neither offered nor necessary; you can get in with your student ID or just walk through the door. Just make sure to check with the info desk or ask around if it’s a big game; there can be a small charge for larger athletic events, such as post-season volleyball games.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Head to the cliffs or to the Peace Chapel.
