Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students would probably agree that if the food in Baker were as pleasant as the people who serve it, they’d all be better off. However, most also recognize that a cafeteria is a cafeteria, and while it gets old pretty quickly, there’s enough variety and sheer quantity of food to satisfy anyone’s appetite when they actually find something they like. Muddy Run is considered the main escape route for anyone who’s just not up to what Baker has on the menu for the day.

One bonus is Baker’s vegan line. The dining hall is also centrally located in Ellis Hall, and Muddy Run is right upstairs. However the main cafeteria is only open for certain mealtime hours, with Muddy picking up the slack for students who need to eat on a different schedule or grab something on the run. And while in general, the upper the classman, the smaller the meal plan—for a reason, they’re all sick of it—one place that everyone stops at is Jitters, the campus coffee shop. Different meal plans come with Declining Credit Balances (DCB) that students can spend on snacks and drinks in Muddy, Jitters, or the new Café a la Carte in Brumbaugh. DCB carries over from fall to spring semester, but not to the following year. If you’re trying to hang on to your DCB dollars, Jitters is going to be your number one nemesis.

Not amazing, but not inedible

The main dining area is Baker Hall; it has different options each day, so you can usually find something you'll like, but, when all else fails, pizza and pasta are available. The food choices generally include variations on pasta, stir fry, and meat/potatoes. There are vegetarian options, but they are not plentiful. There is also a salad bar, a sandwich bar, a cereal section, and ice cream.

Juniata also has a food-court-like area called Eagle's Landing. (It was originally called Muddy Run after a nearby river, so the students generally call it Muddy.) The food isn't great, but it is consistent. It always has subs, Mexican food, Chinese food, salads, burger-type foods, and snacks. The meal exchange system only applies to specific foods each day, but all are available for cash or Declining Cash Balance.

There are a few other places on campus that sell snacks, coffee, and sandwiches, but there isn't a lot of variety.

Dining Option

The food at Juniata is not one of the school's best features, but it certainly is not worth transferring over. The two main dining areas, Baker and Eagle's Landing (commonly called "Muddy"), have several options available during each meal. The food service company, Sodexo, is excellent at providing gluten-free or vegetarian/vegan options for those who need it. If you ever get sick of Baker or Muddy, you can go to Jitter's cafe, or buy your own food at one of the several grocery stores within walking distance.

Variety Hard to Find

Although the school carries many different eating options from Pizza, to Subs, Salads, and Tacos that rotate on a weekly basis in a buffet style, the food will rotate back to the same meals sometimes twice each month. If you are looking for variety in your meals it will be tough to find, but you will be fed healthy meals to keep you going between classes.
