Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In general, if you’re being stupid, you’ll get caught, and if you aren’t, you won’t. Security’s always around campus, but they’re more a reassurance than a policing force. However, if they’re needed to intervene, they will. The officers are friendly, and they watch out for students; as a result, students usually feel safe but not imposed upon.

The unspoken rule is easy: be safe, be happy. Parking violations and noise disturbances are what students most often get cited for on campus. Students drinking underage may get caught if being loud or obvious, but if their approach is safe and smart, they’re usually not discovered. If you get caught with alcohol you’ll be written up, given a warning, and possibly be subject to formal review if it’s a recurring theme in your life. If you get caught with drugs, you could be expelled. Parties off campus are much more likely to be broken up than parties on campus. Security is only called when it’s absolutely necessary, and it’s usually not. Downtown is a slightly different story. Huntingdon police are watching out for your personal safety, too, but they’re also watching out for potentially cranky neighbors who are being kept awake by a student’s good time. Overall, everyone’s pretty reasonable, so strictness isn’t a problem. There’s not much style-cramping at Juniata, unless students are potentially going to do harm to themselves or someone else.

Not Too Strict

Security here is mostly focused on keeping the students safe, not in getting them in trouble. Drinking occurs inside the rooms behind closed doors and if you're taking a drink outside it has to be in a closed container. If you get caught, you will be asked to throw it out, if you refuse you'll have to visit the Dean's office.

Not Bad

I would say that Juniata is not a very strict school. When it comes to underage drinking, most get by with a warning from the RA. If the issue is more serious or the student has to be sent to the ER, then more punishment or concern will come from it, usually from the Dean of Students.

Any concerns that are noticed can be sent to the Dean of Students who acts on them promptly. Juniata is a safe campus and the facilty help to make that happen.

Laid Back Policy

Unless you get caught fighting or dealing drugs, you won't receive harsh penalties. Even possession of pot won't get you kicked out (for the first time). The school will even ask its students to withdraw instead of kicking them out, for some offenses. Getting in trouble for drinking only occurs when freshmen go get wasted at an off-campus party and the Huntingdon police, not the school police, get involved.
