Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s best to bring a computer if at all possible, as you will rely on them heavily during your time at JC. However, if bringing a computer is impossible, Juniata has many computer options that allow students to stay online, researching and word processing as much as their hearts—or course syllabi—could desire. The College has wireless Internet access in classroom buildings and dorms, allowing the school to be more connected than ever, and as a result, students can now take their academics outside if they so choose. As for the general network, there are always a few hiccups in the beginning of the year, but once the kinks are out it’s as fast and effective as students could want. A firewall can make downloading difficult, but it’s an ingrained priority system that favors research and Internet access over music or movies.

Computer-savvy students rave about Juniata’s technological offerings—everything is high-speed and up-to-date. Knowledgeable students can also immerse themselves in a smattering of jobs that allow them to troubleshoot and train to their hearts’ content. For the laymen, the labs are also accessible and normally not too crowded, though it can be hard to find an open machine during finals time when everyone’s trying to escape their rooms to work. It’s also hard to find a free computer at the library at any time, as it’s a popular study haven among JCers. As an added bonus, printing on campus is free.

Wide Selection of Computers

There are multiple places a student can find computers. First you can go to the library. In the library there is a mix between PC's and Macs you can choose from. Additionally, you can chose from Dell laptops you can use as well. Students can also use computers in multiple buildings. These buildings include Brumbaugh and Von Leibig computer labs. Computers can also be rented out from TLT for a period of time. Overall, computers are accessible from almost anywhere on campus.

Computers

There is plenty of access to computers at Juniata College. There are numerous computer labs. For example, the library has two floors available with computers and also allow for students to rent computers for two hours. The tech. help desk has a computer lab as well as computers that are available to students for rental. There are several MAC and PC labs in most of the academic buildings. Rental on lap tops is free. Printing on campus is alsos included and there are several areas available for printing. There is wireless access, however, I think Juniata's network is hard to get onto when you first arive at JC because of all the security settings, etc. The network is slow at certain times because so many people are using it and usually, JC will take priority to things that are more important.

Always Available

While the speed of the wireless connection is not always the best, the availability of campus computers is never a problem. The school requires that students own their own computers, but also provide options to use campus computers when needed. There are several computer labs available to students, as well as campus printing options. The campus Technology Services department is extremely helpful when technological problems arise.

Did You Know?

The Digital Media Zone gives students access to digital video cameras free of charge. They also provide digital editing software and equipment for students to use, from beginner to advanced, regardless of their experience.

Students play an integral role in the computer labs, and student lab managers—some with their own employees and budgets—fill managerial positions for Web development, training, digital media, and for the TLT lab in general. There’s also a student network administrator who helps to run the Juniata network. All of the above work alongside staff to learn the managerial ropes and keep the computer culture on campus thriving.
