Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Drugs at Juniata just aren’t a problem, to the point that the school’s newspaper attempted to investigate drug use on campus and came up with next to nothing. There’s just not much of a drug scene to report on. Yes, a lot of students drink alcohol. A few smoke pot. A few more smoke cigarettes and almost everyone is caffeinated, but just with coffee, and mostly just because they’ve been working too hard to see straight or sleep right. If you’re looking for drugs, yes, you can find them, but you’d have to look pretty hard to find anything harder than marijuana. And if you’re caught with pot, it won’t be pretty. Drugs are one thing the college is pretty strict about.

On the other hand, alcohol consumption is common, as students tend to work hard and play hard, although, as mentioned in the “Nightlife” section, many aren’t really playing as hard as they think they are. You’ll find alcohol at most parties, if not all of them. But when it comes to drugs, they’re not nearly as common as at most other colleges or even high schools, and there’s no pressure to smoke or drink anything at all. As a student said above, if you’re not looking for it, you’ll never have to see it. That pretty much sums it up. Drugs aren’t a problem. No sugarcoating necessary.

Average Drug Occurence

Mostly pot is really prevalent on campus; more serious drugs are not that widespread in terms of habitual use. Compared to alot of wealthier colleges, JC kids tend to stay away from the harder drugs. The administration has pretty strict rules about a student being cause with drug use.

Group-Based

One does not encounter drugs on campus too often, but when they do it usually only Marijuana. When on does encoutner someone with drugs, however, there is usually a small group. Overall, it is barely seen. Drinking, as with most colleges I would imagine, is more noticeable.

Mostly Just Drinking

Drinking isn't a huge issue at Juniata; some loud drunks wander around the dorms on weekend nights, but most students who drink seem to do it quietly among friends. It depends on your RA, but underage drinking will usually only get a warning unless things get out of hand. Some students smoke, but it is kept outside. If you know the right people, you can probably find some illegal drugs, but the campus authorities crack down pretty hard on illegal drug usage when they find it.
