Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The lack of Greek life is not an issue on campus. In fact, it’s the complete opposite, as students are overwhelmingly in favor of its absence. The general mindset seems to be “the students are here, the clubs are here, and so are the parties and traditions—why try to break it up into cliques and assign each a few funky-shaped letters?” When it comes down to it, Juniata students are fiercely proud of their tight-knit community, and they thrive off of its inclusiveness. The school just wouldn’t be the same if introduced to Greek life. Still, if you’re looking for a more focused sense of community, you’ll probably find it within your major(s), in your club, or on your team. Many of the athletic teams shack up in apartments or houses, and students who want more of an international environment or substance-free living are also able to find places to live with others who share their passions and views.

Ultimately, the students are right. Yes, there are cliques on campus, and yes, they are definable by academics, athletics, and activities. No, these cliques are not isolationist, and they’re by no means impermeable, but rather natural, because the students just spend so much time together. Finally, if you’re looking for a traditional Greek atmosphere and you don’t mean in Athens, then no, Juniata is definitely not for you.

Non-Existent

We don't have Greek Life here at JC, but most of the sports teams tend to stick together; not so much that it's cliquey, but it's nice to have that support system. Everyone pretty much has a main group of friends they hang out with, but also socializes with just about everybody.

You don’t need Greek life just to...

You don’t need Greek life just to have fun or to party. There are still plenty of parties on campus. There are millions of clubs, and it’s really easy to start new ones. Plus, most Juniatans want to succeed so they work pretty hard. But they still find time to be in at least three-plus clubs.

There are literally hundreds of...

There are literally hundreds of clubs, sports teams, and academic groups that you can get involved in. From Campus Ministry to basketball to scrapbooking to the newspaper to dancing to history to theater, there is something for everyone. The closest thing we have to Greek Life is academic honors societies, like Tri-Beta for biology, Sigma Tao Delta for English, and Psi Chi for psychology. You should join one that applies to your studies. You won’t go to any cool keg parties, but it looks nice on a resumé.

Facts

Did You Know?
  • While there are no fraternities and sororities, many of the sports teams hang out together so much that they have become kind of quasi-Greek organizations, particularly the men's and women's rugby teams.
  • Storming of the Arch and Pig Roast are two favorite Juniata traditions sponsored by the rugby teams.
